PLEASE VOTE: Curious George OR Elmo for a 15 month old?

I posted a thread a few weeks back asking for DVD recommendations for a long flight to the Middle East. We don't normally allow TV, and so I'm pretty clueless about what's out there.

I've found some used copies of Pokoyo (love it!) and Peep which I can get with free shipping using Amazon Prime, and am paying full price for Baby Signing Time Volume 2.

I'm thinking I'll get EITHER Curious George (Zoo, Night and Other Stories) OR Elmo (Babies, Dogs and More) but not both, since I couldn't find cheap copies with free shipping. Which would you prefer for a 15 month old - Curious George or Elmo?

Thanks!

Curious George may be a little too advanced at that age. DS didn't really start to like it until he was 2ish & could follow the story more. Elmo is always popular. That little red monster is like baby crack.

Another choice you may consider is Blues Clues. It's very interactive with the kids, and it was (and still is) one of DS's favorites. It uses a combo of real people (Steve, always Steve, not that replacement Joe ) and animation, but the cut paper kind. It teaches metacognition, which is when children put the 3 smaller parts (the clues) together to see the big picture (the answer).

Elmo!

Curious George is pretty laid back and they need to be able to follow the plot. IMO it's way too advanced for a 15 month old. My 3 year old is just starting to find George interesting.

You might want to check and see if your flight will have video entertainment for each seat. It was a lifesaver for us when we would fly over to Germany when DS was a toddler. He would watch Little Einsteins/Baby Einstein for at least a couple hours.

Definitely Elmo. My older child never liked curious George.

My 17 month old likes Wiggles, Elmo, Blues Clues, Kipper, Baby Einstein, and Bob the Builder. And Barney -but I hate Barney.

I recommend this (or similar) since it has a variety of shows for cheap on Amazon:

We have a couple like the above and its nice when I need to get something done since we don't have cable.

For that age, elmo, probably... DS1 is a HUGE CG fan though, and has been since... well, since he/we started reading CG books and watching the movie/show from time to time. Actually, its the one show he generaly does get to watch most mornings - I row, do situps & pushups and he watches CG & we're both happy

Agree with everyone...George has been popular here for awhile but Elmo was a sure thing till about 18 mos...and once in awhile still-especially the Christmas movie.

Not sure where you live & when you are leaving but we have quite a few Elmo dvds that I wouldn't mind loaning out to a Mama who would get them back to us.

We really like www.half.com & have been very lucky there finding things...

My vote is for Elmo. DS is 19 months and doesn't follow CG the cartoon at all but does like the books. Also, some one mentioned Bob the Builder - DS LUVS with all his little heart Bob the Builder. He even knows the first few beats of the melody and can hum them. I check out videos at our library and burn them at home and return them - super cheap over here :-)

Another vote for Elmo. At 26 months, Elmo is still DS' favorite. He has yet to get into the Curious George stories.

I've also heard good things about Blues Clues, but haven't tried it yet. DS loves Sesame Street, Baby Signing Time, Fraggle Rock, Winnie the Pooh, and Barney.

Elmo it is!

Okay, you guys have additionally sold me on Blue's Clues and maybe Bob the Builder as well. I had been thinking that 15 months might still be a bit early for putting clues together, but it sounds like they enjoy it so why not! I see I can buy episodes from Season 1 and Season 2 on demand from Amazon, guaranteed to get me Steve only. I may just get a few episodes. Does anyone know how long each episode is?

Ellairesmom, thanks so much for the loan offer. Mamadelbosque has made me think, though, that keeping a few DVDs on hand might be a way to enable me to get back into an exercise routine. I hadn't planned on allowing TV, but maybe once or twice a week would be okay... I should go reread one of those "do you allow TV" threads to think about this again.

Great idea, NaturallyPeachey!

Thanks again everyone!

The Blue's Clues are about 20 minutes long. It definately took awhile for DS to start to be able to actually put the clues together, but the way Steve interacts directly with your child and pretends NOT to be able to see the obviously wiggling little pawprint on the "clue" makes it easy for even the littlest guys to find clues. Kids like repetition, and every episode has the exact same format. Just differnt clues & answers.

I vote for curious george, my ds has loved him for a bit now and he is almost 16 mo right now. Now, he has only seen curious george, fraggle rock and a few snippets of disney, so whether or not he would like elmo, I don't really know. But we do vote george.

Elmo, I guess. CG is too plot-based for many kids that little. Elmo is always popular, but I hate how over-marketed he is, so I try to avoid him.

Blues Clues is quite good. Baby Signing Time is good, if you can watch and remember the signs too. I'm sure there's more, but that's all we have watched that would be good for 15mo.

I haven't seen the videos, but DD has some Curious George books and, although she hands them to me to read, she literally loses interest on Page 1 and goes to get another book.

By contrast, before she'd ever even seen TV, someone gave her a tiny stuffed Elmo and her whole little face lit up like you wouldn't believe! Her little cousin had the same reaction to a Grover toy. We think it may have something to do with the googly eyes.

I agree about the marketing. I never thought I'd consider buying something like this, but given the very long flight I'm thinking I'll get one to have on reserve for emergencies!

Elmo's World. My 21mo old DS loves it. He was just talking about it at lunch today. I initially avoided Elmo because of all the annoying over marketing, but DS responds most to that part of Sesame Street so I had to get over it. There are dvd's of full Sesame Street episodes out there too, so that might be an option. We have one of the TV Fun Pack sets with 3 episodes.

Actually, I suggest a claymation series called Pingu. It is hilarious and has no dialogue. You can see some on YouTube. It is laugh outloud funny even for adults.

I vote Elmo.

Between the two you mention, I'd pick Elmo. My kids never liked Curious George. But they both went through phases where they would have watched Elmo all the time had I let them.

There are other very nice shows out there though for that age it is more difficult. I'd consider Kipper for sure. Elmo/Sesame Street can get kids a bit hyped up, while Kipper is more calming. We also love Pingu like the pp. Both are available on DVD.

Good luck with that long trip. Don't envy ya there...
