Spin-off: foods you loved as a kid that you would cringe to see your child eating... - Page 2

we ate pretty well as kids, my mom always cooked us healthy food.

However:
plain cherrios, with skim milk, and tons of sugar (maybe a 1/4 c? maybe more)

cinnamon pop tarts. omg, we loved those things as a breakfast treat

ore ida potato hash brown toaster things. we could make hash browns in the toaster as 8 year olds!

raw ramen with the msg packets.

goldfish, hundreds of them, every single day at snack time in the morning and afternoon. lol, they were my snack all the time with raisins. its one thing to have as a rare snack, but every day.... oy.

Just about everything! We did not eat healthy in my house.
-canned frosting on graham crackers.
-Ramen
-those packages of Little Debbie snacks, whenever we wanted
-Hamburger Helper with white bread was a regular meal.

Ick. I'm so glad I figured out how not to eat like that as an adult!

-spray "cheese" from a can
-slim jims
-lick-m-aid candy
-fluff and pb on white bread
-Cookie Crisp cereal for breakfast

ack!

Hot dogs, chicken nuggets, cookies from a box (Chis Ahoy, not cookies from a supermarket bakery), soda (I used to drink Coca Cola...maybe once a week but still; gosh that stuff scares me now!), too much cheese.

White bread with butter (or margarine) and cinnamon-sugar.

PB & Butter sandwhiches

I think for the most part we ate okay. It was before "organic". A lot of the veggies I ate came from a can (which we don't buy anything canned now unless we need it for a specific recipe and can't substitute). We drank a lot of orange juice and skim milk--both of which we don't drink in our home. My parents did buy wheat bread (Roman Meal and then Sara Lee when it came out). We always had sweets in the house--remember those microwave cakes? We ate those a lot. We ate a lot of cream of mushroom/celery soup, minute rice. We always had tortilla chips and nacho cheese (from the deli). Lot of lunch meats (mostly from the deli and no bologna). I think for the times though we didn't eat as badly as a lot of families. What's funny is that my parents never said "no" to anything we kids wanted and they never limited what we ate. . .sometimes I wonder if I restrict too much

Our meals were mostly reasonably healthy... but snacks, yuck. the worst one that comes to mind is Fun Dip. I can't believe how much I loved that stuff but the thought of it makes me want to yak now! Also, my best friend and I once made peanut butter and sweet tart sandwiches, with pixie sticks sprinkled on it, EEW!!!

Chef Boy-Ar-Dee pizza in a box. I still can't believe we ate that! We have homemade pizza night here on Fridays, but I do still crave that fake "parmesan" topping sometimes!

Nothing Seriously.

We were the kids who had bran chex, whole wheat bread, no snacks or desserts in the house if it wasn't a special occasion, loads of veggies. A glass of soda when out to dinner was a HUGE treat, and of course, you only got one (NO refills), so you drank it SLOWLY.

Once (literally), my Dad somehow got put in charge of grocery shopping and he bought white (?!) bread and cinnamon toast crunch. It was like Christmas

ETA: Of course, my kids also have distressingly un-festive snack options. They think they've hit the jackpot when they get the sweetened yogurt for snack @ school.

-pop-we had pop EVERY dinner! I mean EVERY EVERY dinner
-pop tarts-i liked the plain non frosted but my dad was a stickler, he NEEDED the frosted ones
-canned veggies-rarely fresh veggies-for years I thought I hated peas. Only canned veggies we buy is canned tomatoes
-sugar crisp cereal. frosted flake cereal with sugar on top(hated it even then)-again my dad automatically put sugar on sugary cereals
-white wonder bread and mayo sandwiches
-white bread with a kraft cheese slice nuked in the microwave until the "cheese" bubbled
-6 slice blt sandwich w mayo
-mac and cheese with cheese whiz

Gotta say though, most of the reason dc wont eat this stuff(besides the fact I dont want to give them a sugar addiction like I have) is that were vegetarian, mostly vegan in the house and well I DEF. didnt grow up that way!

Lucky Charms (any cereal really!)
Pepsi-free
lots and lots and lots of sugar
Bisquick pancakes with fake syrup
white bread

Not much. We ate pretty well (mom had a good garden, and went "granola" with respect to our food when I was pretty young). BUT, I loved Velveeta. I used to cut slices of it, and dip them in a big pile of Miracle Whip. While we still use Miracle Whip around here, I can't quite imagine my reaction to watching my kids snarf down a plate of Velveeta in a pile of it.

OMG! I thought that it was only my dad who made these!! He would also substitute Spam or Vienna Sausages (tiny ones in a can) served with Lays potato chips & Pepsi I loved them as a kid

My mother came of age in the 50's when everything, and I mean EVERYTHING was about convenience. She never learned how to cook and we ate nothing but junk my entire childhood. I ate nothing but hot dogs, bologna, diner hamburgers, and grilled cheese. We drank Coke all.the.time. I honestly don't remember eating vegetables and very few fruits as a child. I remember during the oil embargo in the early 70's, that when we'd be in line to get gasoline, my dad would get me a hot dog from Burger Chef to keep me quiet in the car while we waited. Ugh, I had the most horrible diet!

Thankfully, I learned to cook (and well) as a young adult and dd is not subjected to this kind of child abuse.

I also ate a lot of weiners-handmade by the butchers' at least, but packed with preservatives, I'm sure.
We still make this but I use WW pasta, homemade cream of mushroom soup and no chips on top. It's not the healthiest but it's a great comfort food.

Toaster Strudel...with the little packet of frosting you could squeeze on top.

when I was a kid, my mom was a SAHM and my parents didn't have much money so they pretty much made everything from scratch. I felt soooo abused! LOL... I guess the thing I'd cringe about most is the twice a year we went to Pizza Hut, probably. She was also pretty TF, didn't believe in things like margarine, american cheese, whatever fake stuff out there, and she belonged to a local food-co-op, so she was pretty crunchy, really. She had also grown up all over the world (africa, korea, etc) so we ate a fair amount of ethnic food.

When i was a teenager, things changed - my parents divorced, and my mom was now a single mom, working full time and also going to school full time. She pretty much left us stuff in the house that we could make ourselves for snacks - velveeta and salsa with chips, microwave burritos, ramen noodles, etc. She still usually made dinner from scratch, but often it was home-made pizza with dough that she had made herself... that kind of thing.

I pretty much cringe at all those things.

We used to do white sugar sandwiches on margarine and the cheapest white bread ever. Stale, often, because Dad would buy the day-old stuff to save money. Yummers.

He also bought big bags of stale chocolate-covered doughnuts, which we fell on and devoured. They were tough and awful... even at the time we thought so... but that didn't stop us pouncing on them!

omg PEEPS! I still sneak them sometimes I don't really want the kids eating them though... because to look at the ingredients? ew.
