"Please keep the baby in the 7 lb range" (in order to VBAC)

Note: I am not going back to this MW based on some things I read on my local ICAN list. I still went to the appt as it was my first for this pregnancy and I was in my 14th week.

I went to my appt the other day and the MW was very nice. She said I had to see the perinatologist to talk about my chance of VBAC. Basically, the peri would okay my VBACing or not. I am to make an appt with him in the next month, though as I said, I am not going back to this MW (or hospital) but another one in the area.

Anyway, in talking - she found out my last full term babies were 8 lbs even (38 weeks) and 8 lbs 7 oz (39.4 weeks). She seemed displeased with this. She said that if I want a shot at VBAC, I need to keep the baby under 8 lbs. Yes, I NEED to keep the baby under 8 lbs. Right, 'cause I have control of that? She went on and on about how I need to avoid carbs quite a bit and no fruit juices (I'm bad with carbs admittedly, but I don't drink juice hardly ever). I drink water like crazy, and I exercise fairly regularly. I explained that regardless of how well I eat and how much I exercise, I typically gain 40-50 lbs with my singletons (and lose most all of it within 6 weeks PP). She wasn't happy with that either.

She then wanted to feel my pelvis. So, I decided - what the heck? She felt around some (similar to a pap, not just externally feeling me) and said she didn't think I'd have issue birthing a 9 lb baby even.. but again, please keep the baby in the 7 lb range.

I was just so irked listening to this. But I also had to hold in my laughter as I know that no matter what a woman does (for the most part), a baby will weigh what he or she should weigh at birth.

I just found it all very interesting.

Wow--just wow

I got nuthin'. That may be the stupidest thing I've ever heard--ever.

Well--I accidently convinced my sister that the Soviet Union got sucked into the earth (when it dissolved in '91). But that's it.

My initial reaction is that not only is she being ridiculous, but she seems to be fishing for a reason to deny your VBAC. Sonograms are notoriously inaccurate when judging the size of a baby, so if she ever tried to use one to say baby was too big, it'd be very annoying.

Good luck with your new midwife.

Weird and unexpected from a MW. I am glad to hear you are moving onto different, better care.

so, you're looking into a VBAC huh?
Good for you!

Good Luck!

Loada rubbish.

Bunch of crud

Pile of poop.

Did I say that's a whole heap of tosh?

You'll be perfectly fine with an 8-9lb baby. Why ever not? I'm not worried for you

Like you, I find 2 things hilarious...

One, that she thinks you can control the size of your baby.

And two, that she feels around and thinks you can do a 9 pounder (the fact that she's predicting that by feeling) and then she tells you again that you need to keep it at 7...even though she just felt justified in saying a 9 pounder would fit!

WOW...crazy!

And she passed her midwife exams?

That was my question. I guess I am high risk if I move forward with VBACing.

Anyway, she felt my uterus and wasn't happy that my fundal height was at my navel (uh, my uterus is slightly stretched out since having twins and then two singletons after that..). I had to get a u/s anyway, so she said it sounds like my dates are off. Without getting into the nitty gritty, there is no way my dates are off. NO WAY. But sure enough, baby measured a week ahead and the u/s tech then began saying my dates had to be off as well. Oi vey. LOL.

I'm calling next week to make an appt with the NEW MW.

That's so weird. I know so many women who eat better than most people and have huge babies. And women who eat like crap and have tiny ones. I ate about the same (and gained the same) with both of my babies and one was 10 1/2 lbs (2 lbs bigger than my first). I know women who LOSE weight during their pregnancy and popped out 11 lbers.

Ah, well...not that how much they weigh really determines if you will be able to birth them or not anyway. My huge baby was easier than my smaller one...her head was smaller and she was positioned better AND I wasn't flat on my back. All much more important than baby's weight.

Don't worry too much. My midwife said that her patient's babies *average* about 9 lbs and it's almost never a problem, and she takes a lot of vbac'ers.

My chiro had a hvac and the baby weighed 9 lb 13 oz and measured 22 inches. Short of abusing illegal drugs, I can't imagine how you would control a baby's weight

I had a midwife like that.

I agree that she's fishing for reasons to deny a VBAC. I sure hope you can find a more supportive mw.

I gained almost 50 lbs with my first baby (emergency c/s), then with my second I gained exactly 25 lbs (natural VBAC)...guess what? Both of my babies were exactly the same size, just under 8 lbs & 20.5 inches long. It was funny because I was so hugely pg with my first, then with my second no one even noticed I was pg until the last trimester!

Seriously!!!

you have to send this comment in to www.myobsaidwhat.com

I am glad that you are following your heart and finding a provider who is truly supportive of your ability to birth!

Okay, you cracked me up and reminded me of the time I told my sister I'd gotten a boob job which was why I was/am bigger than her. She was 17 and I was 14 (and she believed me for just a few seconds!).

I think I'll shoot for a 7 or under pounder myself next time. Yeah... that'll show 'em. Sheesh.

This. I probably would have given that MW a snarky reply: “Oh? Shall I take up smoking?” Why not? That’s what doctors used to prescribe in the 1950s to keep baby weight down. But as we all know, obstetrics stems from a proud heritage of evidence-based practice.

And this. Definitely this.

Ahh! I am so glad I came across this thread!

My midwife said nearly the same thing to me a couple of weeks ago. (My c/s DS was 8 lbs 5 oz) But this is a woman I really respect and whose advice I always try to follow religiously! She told me that (keep the baby's weight down and don't eat carbs, etc.) and I just felt so frustrated and confused! How can I have control over that?

I feel a little better about not being able to afford her now!

sounds like trying to tell someone to poop exactly 14oz a week.

That was funny.

To the OP: I'm planning an HBAC, and my midwife has been telling me to eat MORE and gain more weight so that the baby will be as big as I can make her - because bigger babies tend to be more robust and healthy and it's an EASIER birth overall - less chance of complications. Quite a contrast from what this midwife told you! I'm glad you're not going back. The first midwife I had for this pregnancy (not a home birth midwife) made similar comments, telling me I should restrict my weight gain, etc. Crazy. I saw her once and that was it.
