tips for a potted chrismast tree? care and planting

I did some googling, but I'd like some personal experiences. I have green thumbs, and I'm terrified of killing it, either before or after planting.

How important is the transition period in a garage? I read about it, but we don't have a garage.

How to make sure the roots are not too dry, not too soggy?

The ground is probably frozen now, and we haven't predug the hole.

Any particular types of trees that do better?

Anything I need to look for while choosing one in the nursery?

Thanks you!

(climate wise, we are in Nova Scotia, Canada).
