Most Requested Holiday Food Item

Thread Starter
What is that one food item that is consistently asked for again and again by your family and friends? This can be either a food gift, a dish you prepare and bring/serve for the holidays, or even something you recieve as a food gift or someone else brings/serves for the holidays. Both sweet and savory are welcome! Really it can be anything as long as it's something that gets requests year after year. Feel free to include recipes if you're feeling generous!

Pumpkin bread. I make it every year for DH's co-workers (75 loaves) and every year I'm asked when I will be giving it out again.

Buffalo Wing Dip. I made this once for a party and everyone loved it so much I'm asked to bring it all the time (I didn't actually like it, but ).

One of DH's students brings him an assortment of homemade fudge every year. We fight over it (DH doesn't actually want to share) and look forward to it. This year I'm actually volunteering for an organization that student's mom runs. . .I've asked her if that means I can have the annual fudge

All sorts of Christmas cookies, but mostly shortbread.

Buche de Noel (a chocolate Yule log with chocolate cream frosting). It's become our centrepiece Christmas dessert.

Green bean casserole that is not like any other I've seen. It's a cheese based one, nary a drop of mushroom soup in sight. Oh, it's fab....it's been at pretty much every holiday table in my family for probably 40 or 50 years...

Aren't you going to share the recipe? It's not nice to not share.

Spinach dip in a bread bowl. Which is funny because the only reason *I* started making it is because it was my mom's party staple/most requested dish when I was a kid. When I grew up and had to start making/bringing dishes to my own parties, I didn't know what else to make. So naturally, I made spinach dip just like my mom always did. And now it is what I am always directed to bring.

Baklava. My dh is from Turkey and his deceased mother showed me how to make it the one time I met her before she passed (there is no recipe, it's made by feel, mostly). I am told over and over and over that it's the best baklava they have ever tasted. It's simple, but time-consuming and I end up making several batches to give out. It's always the first thing to be polished off. Last year, when the work pitch-in was at breakfast I was asked to bring it and even at breakfast time, it was the first to go. It's just phyllo, walnuts, sugar and butter, but for some reason I seem to have a knack for making it.

Here's Grandmom's recipe!

2 tbsp butter
2 tbsp flour
1 tsp s
1/4 tsp p
1/2 pint sour cream
1/2 tsp grated onion
1 tsp sugar
4 cups drained canned green beans
1/2 lb grated cheese (we use cheddar - as sharp as possible)
crushed corn flakes for topping

melt butter, stir in flour, s&p, grated onion & sugar. Add sour cream gradually, stirring constantly. cook until thickened (this is on stove top - I usually do it my biggest cast iron pan). Add green beans, stir until mixed. In a baking pan (I think we might double the recipe for a 9x13" pan, but I'm NOT sure - you can always throw extra into a second pan if it's too much). Alternate layers of string bean mixture & cheese & top with corn flakes (don't put the corn flakes on until you're ready to bake. you can make it up to the corn flakes a few hours, or the night before & keep in the ice box until ready to cook). Top w/crushed corn flakes & bake 20 minutes @ 400 degrees (preheated) until flakes are golden & cheese/sauce is bubbly.

YUM!

I never thought of it - it's one of those rare recipes with which I never tinker. But - maybe you could do some variation with cauliflower? Hard to go wrong with cheese & cauliflower. It might need to be blanched first.
