When to start rice cereal?

The doctor said she could start at her 4 mo appointment.. but I didn't think she was quite ready. Now she is always watching us eat and drink and trying to grab at everything, but she's barely 5 months old.

When should you start the rice cereal?

Babies don't really need rice cereal. It's pretty nutritionally bereft, and doesn't taste very good.

I would encourage waiting until your baby is at least 6 months old and is sitting up without support. Grabbing at food is not necessarily a sign of readiness. Babies grab at everything.

The gut closes sometime between 4 and 6 months, and there is no way to know if your baby's is closed, so it's best to err on the side of caution. Starting too early can cause food allergies and the eczema and asthma that can go along with them.

I just started my baby on her first food last night, now that she is 6 months adjusted for prematurity, and has been sitting up independently for a month and a half. I gave her avocado. I don't even own a box of rice cereal and have no intentions of buying one!

HTH!

I agree with the no rice cereal. It is the nutritional equivalent of iceberg lettuce and has the bonus of making many babies constipated. Some great first foods are sweet potato, banana and avocado.

We're just about to start solids (she's 5 months today), but if she doesn't like it, or spits it all back out (which is a sign she hasn't lost the tongue-thrust reflex) we will wait a few more weeks and try again.

My vote is never. Yuck and virtually no nutritional value.

My sons first food was smashed avacado. We then moved to sweet potatoes, peas, carrots, broccoli and banana. After that he pretty much ate whatever I ate, just smooshed up. We did avoid honey and peanut/tree nut products for about 18 month. Oh and eggs yolks too.

Hmm glad I posted this then. First time mom and the dr. recommended it. Now I will DEFINITELY not use it. I think I'll wait until she is at least 6 months.

We were talking about this in LLL this week. That rice cereal is fortified with Iron, so doctors used to recommend it because they believed breastmilk was iron deficient for a long time. Now we know that breastmilk is not iron deficient, and that the overload of iron in rice cereal can make babies constipated. But since it was believed for SO long, doctors still recommend it. It is also recommended because it is a very non-allergenic food - but so are lots of wholesome fruits and veggies.

The kellymom breastfeeding site has some wonderful pages on introducing solids (along with links to the research that backs up the info). This is the main "solids" page.

You may want to share the following info with your care provider, just in case other moms there don't think to check.

American Academy of Pediatrics policy paper:
Quote:
Exclusive breastfeeding is ideal nutrition and sufficient to support optimal growth and development for approximately the first 6 months after birth.
Quote:
[Gradual introduction of iron-enriched solid foods in the second half of the first year should complement the breast milk diet. It is recommended that breastfeeding continue for at least 12 months, and thereafter for as long as mutually desired.
In the first 6 months, water, juice, and other foods are generally unnecessary for breastfed infants.
American Academy of Family Physicians policy paper:
Quote:
The AAFP recommends that all babies, with rare exceptions, be breastfed and/or receive expressed human milk exclusively for the first six months of life. Breastfeeding should continue with the addition of complementary foods throughout the second half of the first year. Breastfeeding beyond the first year offers considerable benefits to both mother and child, and should continue as long as mutually desired.
World Health Organization:
Quote:
Optimal infant and young child feeding means that mothers are empowered to initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth, breastfeed exclusively for the first six months and continue to breastfeed for two years or more, together with nutritionally adequate, safe, age appropriate, responsive complementary feeding starting at six months.

My LO never had the rice cereal. I tasted it and found it disgusting so I thought I'd spare her. When she did begin solids at 5.5 months (baby-appropriate table food), she's been eating like a champ. No fights. No fussing. No tummy aches or puking.

Our pediatrician wouldn't be pleased if he had known. He kept pushing the rice cereal and the pureed baby food, too (though he at least encouraged us to wait until she was 6 months). However our DD is healthy as an ox and seems very happy when doing baby-led weaning. Even our very traditional FFing/rice-food fanatic parents are amazed and pleased with their granddaughter's love of real food.

we never did rice cereal either. His 1st food was banana mixed with breastmilk-YUMMY!!

Never . I'm a huge believer in www.babyled.com and we followed Gil Rappley's approach and love it. So easy and makes such intuitive sense in terms of how babies learn to eat.

I also say "never." DS1 never had it, we did the BLW approach. He did feed himself cereal a couple of times, but he hated it. Still does, and he´s two. He will eat just about anything under the sun, but refuses any form of bland cereal.

DS2 will be five months in a couple of days, and we are facing the same issues as you. He wants to take part in mealtime, and will not tolerate being put on the floor if he knows we´re eating. So far, he´s content to play with plates, spoons and cups, so we always put out some extra plastic utensils for him. Once those become boring, we´ll give him a sippy cup with EBM or possibly water, and he can spend some time figuring that out. That´s what we did with DS1 who was very similar at that age, and we made it to 6 months with him.

At some point, probably shortly after 6 months, we´ll start putting soft finger foods in front of him (roasted squash, baked apples, avacado, banana), and if he eats them he eats them...if he doesn´t, he doesn´t. He´s getting all the nutrition he needs from breastmilk, and the food is just for fun in the beginning...at least that´s our take on it. We all had so much fun introducing solids this way with DS1, and I really look forward to doing it again.

Another never here. Ds has never had it & he now eats everything put in front of him & is super healthy.

And honestly, starting solids is not really as exciting as it first seems. It's a lot of work & a lot of mess. I'd definitely wait until baby is 100% ready!

We tried avocado first (at 6 months) but my DD was not into it all, so I just steamed and pureed some butternut squash and she loves spooning it in herself. I am trying to let her pick up bits of food for BLW, but she just squishes them in her eyebrows! The cereals don't appeal to me at all, so I can't imagine her liking them.

Another vote for:

Wait till about 6 months. Then start with crushed/puree'd (we got a little hand-powered puree thing) fruits and veggies.

I don't plan on giving my son rice cereal. But I do want to try oatmeal with him later on, I heard that was very healthy for babies. I'm going to do baby led weaning and actually at Christmas start him off with some cubes of sweet potato while we eat. He turns 6 months on Jan. 11 but has been showing a lot interest in food lately, he's 5 months now.

We started with avacado. My favorite baby food site is http://www.wholesomebabyfood.com/sta...d-schedule.htm

They have rice cereal on there but not first. I never do it alone. I use it more to thicken juicy smashed things like pears. The cereal by itself is gross though.

Another vote for no rice. Not necessary at all!

Another vote for No.
I did try oatmeal cereal with DS once, (he was like 8 months at the time too) but he didnt poo for days! I felt bad, and got rid of it.
