prevnar and pneumonia??

Is prevnar supposed to prevent pneumonia? If so, how effective is it.

This is NOT a vax we will do, but friends dd has had pneumonia twice and is fully vaxed and I am wondering what is the point of prevnar.

The current vaccine protects against 7 of 90 known strains of streptococcus pneumoniae bacteria. I think there's a new one in the works that would protect against 13 strains. They picked the strains that are most prevalent in North America for the vaccine.

This bacteria causes more than just pneumonia; it can cause ear infections, meningitis, heart infections, cellulitis, sinus infections, and some other things.

Strep's not the only bacteria that causes pneumonia, and it can also be caused by a virus.

Having said all of that, I think Holland just pulled the Prevnar vaccine from the market because of some recent deaths.

cause is always a tricky word with these bugs, because large numbers of people can carry them around with no problem.

They are dangerous if they become invasive. Why they are invasive sometimes and not invasive most of the time is the interesting question.

And the other interesting question is what replaces the bugs you ban with the vaccine. When it comes to this type of bacteria, nature does seem to abhor a vacuum.

Very interesting to find out that a study on the Prevnar vaccine was stopped in India because a child died--who apparently shouldn't have been allowed in the study because she in all likelihood had a familial heart condition. This child received the third dose of the standard Prevnar vaccine.

I've never heard of anyone here in the US checking to ensure that kids don't have heart conditions before receiving this vaccine.

Only perfectly health children from healthy families are allowed in US studies as well, then the vaccines are recommended to everyone with VERY few exceptions.
