How long is it safe for a toddler to not pee?

From a health standpoint, I am wondering if anyone knows how long it is safe for a toddler to go with out urinating?

DD is nearly 2 and I usually give her several hours of diaper free time in the mornings. She continues to take in fluids during this time. But she won't pee until I put her diaper on her. Sometimes this is for 5 hours or so. I'm worried about her kidneys being adversely affected by holding her urine for so long. When I finally do diaper her, she is usually ready for a diaper change an hour later (we are using disposables). So that is a lot of pee that she is holding.

Recommendations? I've gotten lots of great advice on how to help her with the transition to the potty, but I want to make sure I'm not going to give her a kidney/urinary infection.

TIA

If this is happening every day, I'd cut the diaper-free time. Perhaps she's not ready to go on the potty yet.

Yeah, I am going to have to cut it, or break it into a few times a day. It happens most days, there are a few days a week where we skip it altogether.

She does tell me when she goes in her diaper sometimes. She also tells me during diaper free time that she has to go, and I take her to one of the toilets. Does this mean she is ready to use the potty or am I rushing her?

I'd still like to know what is a comfortable or safe amount of time for her to be holding it.

I agree that she may not be quite ready. She may be there cognitively but she's may not be "emotionally" ready. On the question of holding pee my son has been known to hold pee for a day so we're talking 8-9 hrs. Certainly not a good thing but he out grew this behavior when he potty trained and he suffered no lasting injury from it.

Hang in there!
