book recommendations on raising baby-PLEASE

Thread Starter
I need some book recommendations. I have found (before baby) many books about raising older children. I haven't found good ones for BABY. I mean books that talk about discipline, consequences, teaching manners etc. I know more about raising puppies. Not that much about that either. I do not expect to entirely agree with these books but I need a place to start. The only book I know about is Babywise. I found that by accident. Please tell me books you know about-even if you don't agree 100% with them.

thanks!

My three favourite books so far are: The Baby Book (Dr. Sears), The No Cry Sleep Solution and Positive Discipline for Toddlers. I bought a million books, but these are the best of the best in my "book" (punny!!)

I'm a big fan of the Sears Family Library books and feel the opposite about Babywise, as I'd guess many here would agree with

The Baby Book is great as one big resource and covers everything from birth to toddlerhood, I believe it is. Great resource for looking things up quickly, etc. I know they also have more specific books about Attachment Parenting, Discipline (that may be for older kids, I haven't looked much at it yet), Breastfeeding, Night time parenting, etc.

There are also a lot of great attachment parenting books that explain what babies really need and why - I'm sure you will get some of those recs too,I don't know any titles off hand!

Happiest Baby on the Block gets rave reviews. Totally.

Please tear up and recycle Babywise and follow nothing that is written in there.

I agree with the previous posters - Sears Baby Book and No Cry Sleep Solution are my two favorite books for developmental, sleep, health, etc... I also really enjoyed the Sears book Growing Together

Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves might fit the bill. It's for any age, baby to teen. Use Babywise as puppy-kennel lining or piddle pads.

I love "The Baby Book", Dr. Sears. It's AP for infants, but also it's full of practical advice and tips and techniques for just about everything.

Unconventional

For teaching and discipline (although it's really more of a non-discipline book) I like Unconditional Parenting. It's well written, with research to back up the statements, and it really made me think about how I want to raise my daughter. It won't teach you how to train your child to behave, though. In fact a major theme of the book is that a carrot/stick approach only teaches our kids that we love them conditionally and does harm in the long run.

A book I have really enjoyed and found very helpful is "Baby Hearts" by Susan Goodwin PhD and Linda Acredolo PhD

http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00...2EG4QZ26R2MC6M

It's not about discipline, but it's a great book about baby's and toddler's emotional well being, about how to nurture empathy in your child, which is so very important.

*out of curiousity, looks up Babywise*

GAH! Yeah, don't do that.

Just a note

I know the OP said "even books you don't agree with," and no one has done this-- but just a gentle reminder: please don't recommend books that advocate things that are against MDC's User Agreement, such as CIO and other harsh sleep training methods, physical punishment, etc.

Thanks, all!

Definitely any of Dr. Sears' books. The Baby book is awesome, I love The Attachment Parenting Book, I'm currently reading The Healthiest Kid in the Neighborhood (but that's more for older, although breastfeeding is discussed), and next up is The Baby Sleep Book.

Not sure how old your baby is, but I'll also chime in for The Happiest Baby on the Block - I found it excellent for the first 6 months or so.

I've been reading Raising Our Children, Raising Ourselves by Naomi Aldort and am really really loving it. It's really about a paradigm shift and leaving traditional scolding and "because I said so" discipline in the garbage... and moving forward from an empowering, loving place. However, I feel like it's not realistic until after 6 months and even so it's impossible to communicate the more complicated concepts.

For easier absorption and sharing with DP or DH I think that the DVDs of the two above resources are worth their weight in gold. My DP always promises to read things I recommend but rarely gets around to it. With a DVD at least you can just stick it in and plop him down on the couch for an hour.

I'm still scolding and using the word "no" more than I'd like with my 11 month old... so any other gentle discipline book ideas would be great!!!

Sorry if this was already posted, don't have time to review the thread. I just finished "Bright From the Start'~by Jill Stamm. Amazon description is as follows, "Should you really read to your baby? Can teaching a baby sign language boost IQ? Should you pipe classical music into the nursery? Dr. Stamm translates the latest neuroscience findings into clear explanations and practical suggestions, demonstrating the importance of the simple ways you interact with your child every day. It isn’t the right “edu-tainment” that nurtures an infant’s brain. It is as simple as Attention, Bonding, and Communication, and it’s within every parent’s ability to provide. Practical games and tips for each developmental age group will show you not only what the latest findings are but, more importantly, tell you what to do with them."

I loved it and would highly recommend it!
