Persephone's in the hospital

My 22 month old son woke up sick on Monday. Fever, cough, vomiting, diarreah, sore throat, achy muscles, headache. Then one by one the rest of my kids and my husband and I.

At first I was managing Persephones fever with tylenol fine. But she kept doing this twisting thing I didn't like. She would twist her body backwards to the right and bend her head backwards to the side. Almost like jacknifing backwards. And her eyes got really vacant. She started staring at the tops of things, above things. Not even trying to focus. This was with the fever or without. She also cried everytime I changed her position. And thats not like her. She's the quietest baby I've ever had. But she's having trouble breathing and they think thas the arching. They said she's retracting. Her sats are normal but the lung xray showed some darkness on one side.

So I called our doctors call line. (which I did the day before as well to check in but couldn't get through all day so I gave up) I didn't get through the call line the second day either but the nurse called me back and after yelling at me because she hadn't been in for her first "well baby" that we don't usually do.. they made an appointment for late that afternoon. I asked if they wanted us in the ER or not and they said no just come in.

An hour after we get there they're sending us to not just the hospital but the biggest hospital around. because they think she has H1N1. Not the one in our hometown either. We had all the kids in the car that had waiting with daddy during our appointment. Not to mention we drive an hour away for someone that is no vax friendly. AND they're all sick. .... now we had to drive to the hospital.

My husband dropped us off at the ER and he went home with the kids.

We were in the ER from 6pm until about 3:30 this morning when they admitted her to the childrens hospital here. They did cultures, catheters, two lumbar punctures (the first one didn't take) blood draws, heel sticks, nebulizer treatments, xrays, antibiotics orally and intramuscular. And a 5 day course of Tamiflu.

They're running a zillion tests but so far all we know is the RSV came back normal. We'll be here another night before we find out the H1N1 results. But in the meantime we're quarantined. We're in a glass room where everyone wears huge masks and gowns. Its very lonely here. I miss my husband.

Anyway, I just wanted to update people and get some positive vibes our way!

Oh, wow, how scary and stressful for all of you! I hope your little one has one of those dramatic fast recoveries where people won't even believe how sick she was when they see her in just a couple of days!

Aww, I'm sorry mama! My second son was hospitalized with pneumonia and a UTI at 9 weeks, so I know exactly what you're going through right now!!

Something that caught my attention in your post was the arching and neck turning. That is classic of reflux. It's a posture, I forget the name, but you can google it and find it. Even if she doesn't always have reflux, she may have some with illness, which might explain the change in behavior.

My third son has "colic" (in his case a dairy sensitivity, we're trying to determine how much dairy he can handle me eating) and when he has an episode, he does exactly what you're describing, arching backwards, turning his head to the right, stiff as a board, impossible to change his position, screaming... It's all gastrointestinal pain and esophageal pain. I feel horrible when it happens (especially because in my case it's because I ate something).

Hang in there...and don't be afraid to request whatever you want/need. If you want some videos, some books, meals, whatever. They have hospital volunteers who would love to help you out!

this video! this is what she is doing! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JmFqz...eature=related

I'll ask someone what they think here.

No change really today. She hasn't done the twisting since this morning. She is still congested but they can't get anything out by her nose. More breathing treatments and more chest PT. They think its helping her a little bit.

They are still waiting on H1N1 results and will redo labs tomorrow. For now they're doing, "supportive therapy." and just helping her stay comfortable.

I'll keep everyone updated. Thank you for your thoughts! Personally I'm not having a barrel of fun here, but luckily the few nights with no sleep allowed me to distance myself during some of the yucky parts of our stay here. I was able to be with her and even help hold her down for her spinal taps. And every hour they aggressivly suction her, which she hates. Since I have doctors running around everywhere that don't know whats up with her, and nurses that are stumped.. its almost like starring in our own HOUSE show. ... only yanno, without House. So that sorta ruins it. LOL

I managed an hour of sleep last night. My humor is all I have left I'm afraid!

Oh! And yes, I am nursing her still. But she isn't nursing as much as I'd like... and they mentioned they only give a few days before they'll tube her. They said I can still pump and they'll give it to her.... but I'm hoping to avoid that.

my husband reminded me.. when everyone was sick I stayed downstairs with the baby for a few nights. I can't sleep with her on me, on the couch because it dips. So I pushed the loveseat up against the couch, so she could be close to me but far enough we both could try to sleep... Annnyway, after we moved teh loveseat over... we saw that there is a whole line of mold on the floor behind the couch. It goes the entire length of that outside wall. We moved the toybox and sure enough it was not only behind it, but inside the toybox..and all over the toys that were unlucky enough to be on the bottom of the toybox.

this is concrete floors with some floor covering. Laminite? I don't know what it is. The floors are ice cold all the time because its just straight concrete and dirt under it.

Is the mold worth bringing up? I've suspected something for awhile now because I've been having breathing issues in the house. (I have asthma and allergies) My 3 year old also has been having some stuff going on. Should I tell them here at the hospital that we just found mold in the house? Would that have helped cause or make her condition worse? What about going home?? Surly if she pulls out of this respritory thing okay, going home to mold wouldnt' be a good idea...

The bathroom upstairs has it as well. All along the ceiling because the fan up there has never worked.

We're in HUD housing. Shouldn't they have to fix this?

Advice? tell the dr's here or no?

SO sorry you are going through this. Sounds like a nighmare. My guess would be that she has the H1N1 since the rest of family probably had it but I would definately mention the mold in case its not H1N!
hugs!!! feel better persephone! i'd mention the mold and maybe you can get a dr order for your land lord to clean it.
Not from your DDC, obviously, but I'd mention the mold to your hospital staff AND mention it to your landlord. There could be more going on at your house than you know and they should want to know.

Sending you LOTS of STRENGTH and LOVE and HOPE- you are so strong momma, please hang in there. I know it's hard, but you are doing so great!

I have no advice about the medical issues, but used to work in a hospital- if you have a nurse that's particularly rubbing you or baby wrong you HAVE THE RIGHT to request a new nurse. Period. You can also ask that they be taken off your case indefinately. I don't know if that will help or not- but PLEASE remember that you have rights, in fact there should be a "patients bill of rights" in your room somewhere....if not ask for them.

I will light a candle for you and the baby, and hubby home with the other sick kids How is he doing? How are the other 4 babies doing? You said they were all sick too- are they getting better? 'Cause that would be a very HOPEFULL sign! I would be calling friends/family to have them bring over FOOD and maybe movies for the family so that you don't have to worry about hubby worrying about all that! I know that the last time I was in the hospital (no kids) I had already sent an email to friends and family asking them to call Michael or bring over a dish for dinner while I was in the hospital....it really, REALLY Helped him to know that he was that loved..... it's so alienating when you are home with sicky kids!

I hope to hear WONDERFULL updates soon! I am keeping you ALL in my thoughts!

Thank you for the support!

My husband was able to come visit us today!!!! Seeing him made me so happy! And he was happy to be able to come hold PJ for awhile. My sister in law stayed home with the other kids. Its been over 24 hours since they've had a fever so the dr's said they were not going to be contagious to be around.

PJ is doing great tonight. She was happy and actually smiling and cooing for a short while. Still not nursing great though. It all depends on the nurse we get. Some are happy with her intake, others start the GI tube talk. One of them kept insisting I tell her accuratly how much she's drinking. And when I said, "All I can tell you is she did better than last time." and she said, well thats not good enough. I need you to tell me exactly HOW much she's eating! ..and when I faltered suddenly she said, "OMG, you're breastfeeding aren't you? I'm so sorry! I didn't realize until I didn't see any bottles around... I'm sorry!" LOL I kinda thought it was odd they wanted to know EXACTLY how much I was nursing.

Still waiting on the h1n1 results. The lab was closed for the weekend so hopefully that'll be back in the morning.

Other than that, we have no other news at all. We aren't sure what caused her fever, we just assume it was what we all had.

I told them about the mold and they said it definatly has to be cleaned up and that its possible she was born with allergies since she's always been a very noisy snorty breather.

She's sleeping for the moment so I'm gonna try and get some rest too.

sorry i don't have any advice, but sending positive healing energy

I'm so sorry! I'm praying for a speedy recovery

Hoping for a swift recovery!!!!!
Have you thought about pumping some and then bottle-feeding the milk? It takes less energy to drink from a bottle than bf and I've heard of doing that for sick babies.
Hey, just want to send you my support! It sounds like things have turned the corner, I hope your baby continues to improve. And I hope you can give yourself some TLC too -- if not now, then as soon as everyone's home and healthy -- which hopefully will be very very soon!
Hang in there!

Official confirmation, we all did indeed have H1N1 (swine flu) The CDC called me earlier today. I feel like a celebrity. LOL

PJ is doing a lot better! She's not nearly as congested as she was and she's kept all her breastmilk down today! She doesn't enjoy the Tamiflu, but theres only one day left.

Thank you all for your well wishes! Everyone is cranky here, but on the mend. This flu wasn't much fun to have! Personally I was hit very mildly (go figure, I'm teh one with asthma) but my kids were hit very hard.
