It's the Cheesiest!

Nutritional yeast that is.
Which brand(s) do you use? Is there one which is "cheesier" than others?
I've been enjoying nutritional yeast for some time, thanks to ds1's dairy allergy for introducing me. I don't however find it that cheesy. I've just been getting the bulk stuff from my co-op so I don't know what brand.
I realize it won't be the same no matter what but surely there's one that's "better" than others?

I buy it in bulk normally. I think it's the red star. I've found adding some ketchup or salsa to my cheese sauces makes them cheesier for some reason.

I like to add some chili to cheese sauce and top tortilla chips or fries with it.

I also use Red Star, bought in bulk.

It's not that cheesy on its own, but combined with the right ingredients it can get quite cheesy.

I use KAL brand. I bought a huge container of it and it's lasted forever! I'm certainly not a nutritional yeast expert but KAL brand tastes fine as far as I'm concerned.

My concern with The Uncheese cookbook is that I think a lot of the recipes are nut based (correct me if I'm wrong) or soy based and we have intolerances to both in the family as well as the dairy allergy.

I looked through the Uncheese cookbook and I think it's not as bad as you think, but it partly depends on whether you can eat sesame seeds and tahini or not.

A lot of the recipes use either tofu or cooked/canned white beans, she lists generic plain non-dairy milk (or sometimes water instead), and if miso is an ingredient, she says you can use chickpea miso which is soy-free (example). She even has a recipe for a soy-free vegan mayonnaise ("beannaise").

Every recipe says if it is free of Gluten, Nuts, Soy, Yeast, Corn.

I counted recipes, listed by chapter/section:

Spreads, Dips, Pestos, Sprinkles: 11 with soy and/or nuts, 5 with tahini only, 5 soy/nut/tahini-free

Hot and Cold Sauces: 5 with soy and/or nuts, 5 with tahini only, 9 soy/nut/tahini-free

Soups, Stews, Chowders: 2 with soy and/or nuts, 3 with tahini only, 2 soy/nut/tahini-free

Fondues: 3 with soy and/or nuts, 4 with tahini only

Pasta, Polenta, Main Dishes: 4 with soy and/or nuts, 4 with tahini only, 4 soy/nut/tahini-free

Quiches, Dinner Pies, Casseroles and Souffles: 11 with soy and/or nuts, 2 with tahini only, 4 soy/nut/tahini-free

Pizzas, Breads, Little Bites, Sandwiches: 4 with soy and/or nuts, 2 with tahini only, 11 soy/nut/tahini-free

Salads and Dressings: 7 with soy and/or nuts, 4 with tahini only, 2 soy/nut/tahini-free

Block Uncheeses:
7 with soy and/or nuts, 1 with tahini only

Sweets: 14 with soy and/or nuts, 3 soy/nut/tahini-free (unfortunately those 3 are crusts only; all the fillings have tofu)

Wow. I wasn't expecting that kind of breakdown! Thank you so much for taking the time to do that!
I guess I'll have to check it out in a little more detail. There are additional intolerances () we're dealing with that I didn't think would come into play (like gluten and eggs ). I'll make sure to do so when DH and I go to the city this weekend (since we'll likely be going to the bookstore. ).

You're very welcome, I know how frustrating it can be when you are dealing with lots of food restrictions. BTW although a number of recipes have flour in them, most of them say "any kind; your choice".
