How much $ for old sweaters?

I searched through old threads, but couldn't find anything on this...

Dh and I went to some thrift stores today in search of old wool sweaters to convert to covers, and I was wondering how much I should be willing to pay for old sweaters?

I know that this can vary greatly, but, for instance, one place had a bunch for $6.99/sweater, and I was thinking that at that price, I would probably be better off buying the wool by the yard!?

We live in Texas, so wool sweaters aren't a common clothing item around here

So what is the most I should be willing to pay for old sweaters, if I want to save money?

Once you get a certain number of posts (maybe 100?) you can see the MDC trading post... you can post there asking for sweaters. Around here there are MANY felted wool sweaters or wool sweaters-with-holes at the thrift shops.

I think less than $5 is the way to go... but on the other hand, one sweater makes 2 wool covers + a pair of longies Compared to buying a yard + of just the right wool fabric, you are getting a great deal.

If you find a small local thrift shop, you can ask about getting access to their rejected clothing (sweaters with holes or dirty)

my good will has sweaters reg. price for $3.38 and then the have at least one color tag for half off and on wed. one tag color is $.25 so I need to make a GW trip on Wed.

Oh and this time of year there are RACKS of sweaters but you do have to pick through them to get wool ones.

Thanks; I'll try to stick to $5 or less then (preferably less)!
I am going to see if our local GW has any daily specials as well.

Off to find old sweaters...

Since wool interlock is easily $15/yd, and buying soakers new is about $15 each, and longies closer to $20... if I pay less than $10 for a sweater, I'm good with it.

I don't know if you have them in your area, but I have found that I can almost always get things at Salvation Army for quite a bit less than at Goodwill. the 2 places I have lived, since I started buying wool sweaters for longies, they have been 1.50-2.00 each at S.A and more like 4.00 each at GW. HTH and good luck

well, I personally don't like to spend more than $2 on a sweater, however, I'm in the frozen north, and that's much easier to do than in TX. My favorite place to hunt for sweaters are church garage sales. Around here, these sales often have a bag sale for the latter part(or the second day) of the sale. Which means fill a paper grocery bag for $3-5. That's how I got a majority of my winter stash sweaters.
