Thanks Tizzy--I really did not think he would pull out of it and wanted tips on dealing with comfort and anything useful--
He actually is better everyday now --still getting a peniciilin shot in the am and now on prednisone pills 1/2 a day for 3 days then 1/4 a day for 3 days -has helped -he can now eat all by himself !!
He drags his hind end but is able to move much better everyday we are massaging his back and legs -it is a miracle to us !
His name was Chief -thinking of Miracle !

This thread has completely haunted me ever since I read it. Please post an update.

I do understand hunting, and a "utilitarian" animal. I understand why it would be easier to choose to euthanize this kind of animal over a beloved family pet.

I do NOT understand, however, how the pain and suffering of an animal, any animal, is ok. I don't understand why you are ok with that.

Have you called the vet like somebody suggested? That would be free. If not, would you mind explaining your reluctance to do that?

It would be hard to explain --
just 2 weeks ago -right before the dog started acting ill--
Our office cat at my place of employment got ill -
we took up a collection for the vet bill to diagnose it -$400-----
then it had leukemia -so they put it down $100 more (I only put in $10 )
anyway-
the dog was ill for 5 days before I ever saw it -I did not take care of the dog-ever--my husband did all the feeding etc.
So after 5 days of not eating much and decline -I go to see him and think its to late anyway-
BUT the dog was still alert acting -not in pain acting -so I start syringe feeding him and then he still is not acting in pain -just not well -
so what to do ? Try antibiotics ,etc and he is still improving ---so why see a vet now ?-(I FIGURED IF WE CALLED THEY WOULD SAY _BRING HIM IN _)
so today he is walking !! eating !! Better still !
a miracle it is -
we have talked about it and will see if we can get a small fund going for dog care when my dh gets some work so we do not have to go through this again.
lesson learned .

Take the dog to the vet or the humane society. I hate to see any animal suffer needlessly.

Merry Christmas

well-he is a miracle dog-better everyday-
walking now but leans to one side -is stronger every day -eating great and drinking well-
if we win the lotto-we are going to sponser a vet to give free clinic care to people for their animals.

Please consider pet emergency insurance. You can buy a plan for as low as $100 per year. It saved us about $2500 when our puppy broke her leg. We have used gopetplan.com with great results. The SPCA also offers a plan and a few others.

Beagles are domesticated animals not wild animals

Calling a domesticated animal a hunting dog versus a familydog makes no difference. You have no business having an animal that depends on you if you aren't willing to get it medical attention. Yes from your atrocious post your dog appears to be strong and recovering but that doesn't mean you are responsible.

Last July my 15-16yo rescue Husky's health took a downward turn. She was crying out in pain. She voided her bladder on the floor. She laid down and looked very tired. I called the vet and he said it may be time. I took her to the vet and we decided to euthanize her. First she was given an injection to relax her although she never moved from when I carried her in and she laid on the table in my arms very still. Then the vet inserted an IV with medicine that stopped her heart. It cost $60 and I didn't have to pay right then.

Many times we only have to overcome our feelings of shame and embarrassment at being poor and people will help us.

We've all heard horror stories about the cat with cancer that the vet charged $3000 to cure. Have you heard about the vet who treated a dog for free? My BIL had his rescue dog treated for heartworms for free and my SIL had her dog's broken leg set for free. You have to ask for help; it doesn't always appear magically.

Many country folks treat their animals humanely by seeking medical treatment. It's fortunate for your dog you are a nurse with an ounce of compassion.

Our dogs depend on us. Sometimes that means medical care.
