For those of you who chose to have an ultrasound mid-pregnancy...

and are/were homebirthing. How did you go about doing it. Did you just call any OB and tell them you need an ultrasound? Did you tell them of your HB plans? My last pregnancy I did (suffer through) go to an OB up until I had a 20 week ultrasound but I never told him my plans or that I was seeing a CPM. I chose not to do it that way this pregnancy b/c I feel it's a waste of my time. I do want an ultrasound around 20 weeks but I don't know how to get one without having any care established with an OB already. I had someone tell me to just call and tell them I just realized I was pregnant and get the ultrasound that way but I don't know if that's the best route. Would just like to hear how others handled this. Suggestions?

My midwife was able to order one at a free standing ultrasound place with my first, and with my second she sent the orders to the hospital where I would have delivered- because that was the only place my insurance would cover (aside from an OBs office). Talk to your midwife about it.

Well, I'm guessing things are different in the US than in Canada. Here in Canada, my midwife simply told me to call an ultrasound lab and schedule one, so I picked one, called and made my appt, and they sent all the info to my midwife. And our health care here covers all the costs of that.

My homebirth midwife is a CNM so I don't know if that makes a difference, but she just wrote out a prescription for the "anomaly ultrasound" and said I could go wherever I wanted. I'd had my ultrasound at a certain OB's office during my first pregnancy (was seeing hospital-delivering CNMs then and never had a written script), so I went there. We have certain places locally that just do ultrasounds, since most OB offices don't do them at the actual office, so those were my back-up plan.

My midwife referred me to a community clinic for my ultrasound -- I would have gone to my regular gyn but my crappy insurance didn't cover maternity care.

My midwife recommended someone who does u/s on Saterdays at a hospital fascility, so I phoned her and made an appointment. I didn't need referrals or notes from anybody.

My midwife (a CNM) wrote the appropriate orders/referral to a free-standing place that does all sorts of different radiology tests.

My midwife wanted me to meet with an OB in town just to have that connection in case they needed to order any tests for me... (Midwives here are not licensed yet so they can't order medical tests or treatments.) I suffered through the appointment, they ordered an ultrasound and I hope I never have to go back to an OB again! Thankfully, by my next baby, if we are still living here, midwives will be licensed (licensing is going through in July).

My midwife has a private U/S tech that comes to her home to do them. He owns several machines and has people who work for him also. He travels to different local doctors offices that don't have machines of their own also.

It is nice to be able to get one scheduled through her and just have one while lounging on her sofa.

I go to an OB that unofficially backups homebirth families and can get test done through his office.

At my old OB office anyway, I know for a fact that a friend of mine went in for her first appt at 18 weeks and they said since she was close to 20, she may as well have the u/s. So she had the appt at 18 weeks, yes, but then went in the following week for the u/s and then quit going. She wanted the u/s and went to one prenatal appt with the OB in order to get it. The OB didn't give her any issue in her not getting prenatal care before that (she was seeing a MW, but he didn't know).

My midwives are CPMs. If we had wanted an ultrasound she would have refered us to a naturopathic doctor's clinic that has an U/S machine. In an earlier pregnancy that I miscarried we went there to confirm the m/c by u/s.

I actually had my ultrasound today! Everything looked great and it was nice to see baby!

I went to the practice that provides backup for my midwife. I had an appointment/checkup today too, just to get on their books incase something comes up later and I need to have baby in the hospital instead of at home. It was nice to check the place out and meet one of their midwives (CNM, my midwife is CPM) I really liked the practice, I saw a great midwife and she said they do 90+% of all the births, so that was nice to know. I would have gone to this particular practice if I hadn’t found my wonderful homebirth midwife…

My midwives gave me a form that they filled out for my ultra sound that I could take to any hospital I wanted. The ultrasound Tech doesn't need to know about your birth. They won't be with you at or caring for you after your birth.

My midwife is a does not have any connections with Drs and I did tell her I wanted to have 1 ultrasound mid-pregnancy and she said that's fine but that's all she said. I'm in Michigan and I have insurance that will cover maternity care but I'm pretty sure and OB or a CNM has to be the one to order it(if I want it covered by insurance). It sounds like I will just have to make an appointment when I get closer to 18 weeks. Then I have to get all my records transferred from the 3 previous Dr's I've seen, etc. Pain in the neck. I wish I could just call up the hospital and say I need an ultrasound make me an appointment and the results can go to me.

I do a mid-pregnancy ultrasound to find out the sex of the baby but not for any diagnostics. I just go to a non-medical place nearby that does 3D/4D ultrasounds and I asked if she could just do the regular 2D for a cheaper price and a quick check between the legs.
