possibly weaning, not yet two

My ds is 22 months old, and he seems to be ready to wean whereas I am not so sure I am ready!

He nurses once at night (sometimes), and now he hasn't at all yet today! It's 1 pm and he's down for a nap. If he does nurse during the day, it's because I ask him if he wants to. He seems content lately just having his hand down my shirt.

Any other non-pregnant mamas find their baby self-weaned this early?

Why not just ask him if he wants to nurse? If you want to continue nursing him till he's two, there is nothing wrong (IMO) with gently reminding your LO to nurse. That said, he's just shy of two, and if you're planning on weaning him then anyway, you could just start now.

DD is almost 15 mo, and would probably only nurse at bed time if I didn't sometimes ask her if she wanted to nurse. Toddlers are busy, busy, busy and don't know what's best for them. If it's been 4-5 hours since she last nursed, I usually remind her -- but if she were almost two, I'd probably just let a few sessions slip by. I too plan on weaning around 2.

We remind them about important things all the time - eating healthy foods, wearing mitts when it is cold, not putting hands in the dog's mouth, and nursing is one of those important things IMO. They get SO distracted at that age - they need reminding!
