Free advertising brainstorming?

I'm starting a green housecleaning biz, and was wondering if anyone had any ideas for free advertising, other than Craigslist. I've got two clients so far, and I'm going to stick postcards in the doors of one of the client's condo building, but need more ideas!

TIA!

Do you have any local Green or Sustainable Living Groups? For example, we have a Green Parenting Group and a Sustainable Living Group here in town. It's a great way to network with like-minded people and pick up some business.

That's a good idea! I do know people in those groups, maybe I can get a mention in a newsletter or something.

Local forums? I don't sell any cleaning products. There's a local mom's forum, is that what you mean?

when i lived in the US there were pushpin boards in the supermarkets, and HFS for stuff like that. Also are there YMCA or JCC in your area, they also might have something along those lines.

great idea though, wishing you much success!

I too was going to suggest grocery stores, food co-ops, local crunchy cafe, kids school (if not home schooled), have some business cards made up at Vistaprints for cheap and put them under windshield wipers...

1. check ordinances before you do the under the windshield thing!

2. ask your clients for referrals

3. drop info off at family owned business--children's resale store, consignment store, local toy store, etc.

You could create a business Facebook page, and word would spread through your friends. It might not get you too far, but it's easy and every little bit helps!

If 'green cleaning' is unique in your area, try writing and sending out a news release to any news papers in the area, especially any freebies. Take your flyers or cards (vista print is wicked cheap!) to the farmers market, high end liquor stores, gourmet or natural foods stores. Check local libraries for bulletin boards. SOme libraries will let you speak and will advertise the speaking engagement for you, so you could talk for 45 minutes about why green cleaning is important and give a few tips and hand your cards out to attendees. (This how we found our yoga instructor!) You can also tuck your cards in to books at the library that your clients are likely to read, natural living, etc.. Good luck!!

If you have a community newspaper, see if you could get an article written about green cleaning or write a press release announcing your new business. Community newspapers are usually very small and don't have tons of staff writing articles. They love it when people submit content to them. Don't forget a nice action shot of you and your green cleaning

You have lots of great ideas offered by pp.

As for client referrals - offer your current clients a free cleaning if they refer a new client who uses you twice or three times or whatever helps you break even.

Also, if you have a local chamber of commerce, check and see how much it is to join. I know you don't have the funds to spend. If you join and network at a few of their events, I can almost guarantee you'll get your membership fee back within the first six months if you network, do follow up calls and send out follow up promotion post cards to them. Good luck!
