A positive for Target

I had to do some shopping this weekend to do while waiting on DH so I went to Target. DS and I were there for 3 hours so I knew there would be a point in which I had to nurse. Well I went to the food court, ordered myself some stuff and sat down with the baby to eat. As soon as I got him latched on an older African American man who was an employee walked up to me and said "so you are doing it the old fashioned way". I said yes and waited, he said "good, look at me, that is how I got so big, I just wish more of my young people would too". This man was a good 6'3 and it was really nice to hear an older man say that. I only mentioned him being AA because our area has one of the lowest rates of breast feeding in the AA and hispanic communities. He then said it was good to see a mom out doing it the right way, maybe some people would get the right idea.

So keep up the good work mamas because people are watching, and sometimes that is a GOOD thing.

Target was my DS's favorite place to NIP. I never had anything but positive experiences.

Our target is like that too. We go there for random things and I love their pretzels. The women who work back there all know DD and have always commented on her growth and development. I think they enjoy her because she always smiles at them and reaches her hand out to touch them. They even asked to see her one year album after seeing that I bought some scrapbook stuff there. They're the best.

And our target has "natural feeding" and "breastfeeding" together, as in a sign that says both. I think the difference is that they have stuff for physically nursing a baby and for pumping.

I've also never had a problem NIP there. But I've also never seen anyone else do it )-:

The nursing rates in general for black people in the US is horribly low. There's a really sad cultural stigma for black women who nurse. I so rarely meet black women who nurse, and even less often those who NIP, or are vocal about it. So when I do meet one I super-congratulate them. In fact, I had a customer at work recently (black, obviously) who was pregnant and still nursing her 10 month old and planned to tandem nurse. :

(FTR, I say black as opposed to African American because, well....you're either "American" or you're African lol non-US people will understand.)

If you see him again you should tell him Michael Jordan nursed until he was four!
