first words

How do you determine you DC's first word? Was it clear what it was? I want to fill in DD's baby book but am not sure if these are actual words or noises. I'm not agonizing over this, but am curious what others do.

She started saying dadada a couple months ago, but I kept telling DH that it didn't count because it wasn't in context. But we just noticed she says it more when he's in the room and sometimes yells "dadadadadada" when he comes in.

She usually says duck when I hold up her rubber duck, but she also says duck for the rubber turtle and frog. It's really cute. And she yells "duck duck duck" randomly. She says ball, but like duck, it isn't always in context, and it's more "ba" than ball. Same with dog. She does look at the dog and say "daw", but says it for a lot of other things too.

Yes, it's noisy around here!

If a word is used in context a couple of time I consider it a first word. It's common for babies to use blanket terms, like frog for all reptiles, etc. My friends baby thought that HOT meant NO for a while..

i swear my kid says hi. we say it to her all the time and she mimicks it back to us. yea she's only almost 3 mos and i know it's not 'real' words yet but mimickry is the way babies learn language.

I am very reluctant to record something as a spoken word unless I'm absolutely sure about it -- it's my conservative academic training.
So I Only just realised that DS-22 months has probably been saying "Look!" for about 6 months now, but I wasn't sure because it just sounded like a generic expression of his ("eeyoo!")
