experience in Virginia (laws)?

we may be moving to VA next spring and i'm wondering how the laws are. we currently live in MD but dd is only 4.5 so i haven't had to deal with anything legal yet.

i'm also considering eastern KY because the laws seem to be easier but that would be further from family than i'd like to be.

My Sis HS in VA for a while (till they moved)

I know she had to "record" the homeschooling under her DH as he had a 4 year college degree and she does not. However i do not know what other options were open to her -- DN was in K and 1st and he is in 5th now -- so it has been a while.

this site will let you look up the laws by state ...

I believe the law changed a while ago, and now anyone with a high school degree can homeschool with the same rules as a college grad.

Virginia's homeschool laws aren't bad. Send in a Notice of Intent at the beginning of the year, and send "proof of progress" at the end of the year.

Here's the best source I know for info on homeschooling in VA:

(IMO, HSLDA often makes things seem more confusing than is necessary)

sorry I didn't know the laws changed.

I have friends homeschooling in VA- they say some of it depends on the county you live in- in her county she has to do end of year testing with her kids and send in the scores- but she can administer the tests herself. What part of VA are you looking at living in?

i think it's called Giles County. how do you find tests? are they standardized that you have to order from some specific source? do you end up having to "teach to the test" (pretty much like public school)?

My friend orders her tests from a company- I'm sure there is a VA support group that could help you figure this out if you move there. I know my friend does not teach to the test, but she does do a pretty traditional education, not an unschooling approach. Also- I'm not sure if it matters how well your kids score in early elementary anyway- and by high school they will most likely be far ahead of their schooled peers anyway.

Giles Co. is pretty- but I don't know the homeschool climate there.
