Referred to EI for possible texture issues

I posted in the breastfeeding forum because my nearly 14 month old can't keep solids down- they come right back up along with any milk consumed in the recent past. I was told to look into EI for feeding and speech therapy but I'm not really sure what to do at this point- she meets milestones and everything as far as I can tell, but just can't keep solids down. What is EI? What happens? Could my daughter being born near term (36 weeks) have anything to do with it? Is it possible this is a phase and not symptoms of a larger problem? Should I ignore it? I'm really concerned and don't know where to go. tia, sorry if this is not the right place to post.

I think it is somewhat strange that you were referred to EI for food coming up. I mean that implies that your daughter didn't gag when the food was in her mouth but she actually swallowed the food and then vomited? My son has texture issues. He gags on most foods. He will spit them out instead of swallowing. My youngest dd had severe reflux which caused her to vomit A LOT. If your daughter is not gagging I think I would ask for a referral to a pediatric GI to rule out reflux and maybe other things.

Hope you get this figured out soon!

I agree with Aris. Texture issues would mean the food doesn't go down at all. Plain ol' vomiting would have me worried about the digestive tract so I would ask for a referral to a ped. GI.

Yes, I would check out possible medical issues, such as GI problems, EE, and food allergies/sensitivities.

My DS has huge food texture issues, and he would usually not even put food in his mouth. Sometimes he would even gag or vomit if he saw certain foods (like banana). If he did get food in his mouth, he would spit it back out or gag trying to get it out. Sometimes vomit would follow the spitting or gagging.

It sounds like your DD is having an entirely different problem.

I'm not trying to be dumb, but what is the difference between gagging, vomiting, and spitting up?

Gagging is making the sounds, but not actually expelling anything. Vomiting is expelling stuff. I believe spitting up is the same as vomiting. Choking is actually having trouble breathing and getting something stuck in the throat.

Thank you so much, this has been pretty helpful. I'm taking DD to the ped begining of next week, and I guess we'll go from there.

I took my daughter to the ped., and he ref'd us to ei. My daughter is eligible for services and we're getting an IFSP next week. Just felt like this thread needed an update.
