Tell me your morning sickness/nausea remedies!

Thread Starter
I'm 7w pregnant today and I have a Rx for Zofran, but it doesn't seem to be working. I'm desperate for something to keep the nausea at bay because I can't function at work with being so sick to my stomach (I'm on phones 100%) and God forbid I ever have to actually vomit, I share a unisex bathroom with 11 other people so yeah, not the most private of places where I have ample time to do what I have to do, either.

It wasn't that long ago that I had morning sickness with my 15month old DD, but this time, it's far worse. I can remember lime popsicles helped, as did sour and peppermint candies, but other than that, I can't remember anything. And, I know that suggestions that I got from other mom's were far better than anything I'd found searching the web.

So... please share with me what YOUR best morning sickness/nausea remedy is... Thank you VERY much!!!

I feel for you--that is the worst thing ever! I have used: unisome and B6 at night; motion sickness bracelets; a prescription for nausea (generic name is ondansetron); ginger tea and candy chews, the morning sickness lollipops; an aromatherapy stick for nausea; snacking through-out the day and night (never let your blood sugar drop).

The unison and B6 combo worked the best for me--I didn't care if anything was a placebo effect...just make it stop!

Good luck

Even Zofran didn't work for me during my first pregnancy, nothing did.

Second and third pregnancies it worked pretty well (aside from nightmarish consitpation! ).

I've never found anything else to work and I have tried EVERYTHING.

Oh and considering how sick I was the first time I actually took to throwing up in a trashcan in the empty office next to my cube (since I would have been in the bathroom all day otherwise) or in my own trashcan when I couldn't/was to tired to make it that far. Looking back I don't know how I even survived.

I have had great luck with meclizine (Bonine). It's an over the counter motion sickness med. It keeps me from actually throwing up. Ondansetron (Zofran) doesn't do a thing for me either.

I remember those days, all day sickness for me. For me nothing really worked except time and I was desperately trying anything. But recently I was looking for a remedy for a friend at a local health food store and the clerk suggested peppermint essential oil rubbed on your temples. My friend said it helped her. Be sure to use only a the smallest amount.

One big thing that helped my all day sickness was a tip from a midwife. She told me to eat a little bit of protein whenever I got up to pee at night. That changed my life! It didn't sure the sickness, but I was better able to function throughout the day.
When I got up, I would have a spoon or two of peanut butter, some yogurt, bite of granola bar, etc

I made fresh ginger tea. I've heard the motion sickness wristbands and/or B6 helps too.

For me, an excellent regimine was eating half a Unisom with 50mg of B6 right when I woke up, with a high protein breakfast (but not too much food). And then every 5 hours take half a unisom with 50mg B6 until you go to bed. At night, eat a small serving of steak or some other kind of meat that you can manage.

While nauseous, take a ginger capsule and try using the homeopathic remedy, Nux Vomica.

Eat every 1.5 to 2 hours. Foods that worked for me during this time were:

peanut butter toast with honey (about 10 grams of protein)
bananas
one cup of lowfat vanilla yogurt (10g of protein) with protein powder (9g of protein) with 1/4 cup of High Peak Protein granola (6g of protein for a total of 25g)
oatmeal (4g) with protein powder (9g) with cinnamon
mixed nuts (5g/ 1/4 cup)
bean soup (8g per cup)
protein shakes (Odwalla makes some with 18-30g per bottle)

These are just some suggestions -- when I was suffering it would have been helpful for me to have ideas, but it was SO HARD to think of food being so disgusted by everything. I also tried Zofran and it did nothing for my nausea. I wouldn't throw up, but I would suffer! Unisom on it's OWN works really well to relieve not just vomitting but the nausea. I felt hungry and enjoyed my first meal for the first time in weeks, 1 hour after taking my first Unisom. I have no idea how it works, but it's something to do with it being an antihistamine.

As someone that absolutely despises nausea/vomitting, more than normal, my advice to anyone suffering is to know that it will pass, never eat anything that smells revolting to you, enjoy meals when you can (SAVOR MEALS WHEN YOU CAN) and be thankful for the good moments.

Oh, and buy some lemon oil, put it on your sea bands and smell it when you can't escape a smell that's starting up your nausea. It's better to prevent it from even starting.

Good luck!

Acupuncture!!! The treatments I've gotten so far, although it takes a few days to kick in, and lasts only 3-4 days, have been incredibly helpful - When it's working, I feel almost 100% normal. I wish I could afford to go often enough to keep it this way the whole week, but, sadly I can't so after it wears off, I'm back to miserable and vomiting and all the rest. During those lulls, I try what others have recommended (I find that peppermint works much better for me than ginger, apparently because I run hot), and chewing gum between snacks/meals often helps a lot.

Giving birth.

For me, it was time that has fixed it this pregnancy. None of the old stand-by tricks worked, even Zofran. Acupuncture would provide temporary (2-3 hour) relief, but nothing lasting. I think I lived on lime popsicles for the first 15 or so weeks of this pregnancy. They were the only thing I could keep down longer than 15 minutes.

With other pregnancies, I was able to do the Unisom/B-6 & protein approach that a PP mentioned. Hopefully you will find something that works well for you!

For me I had to eay something every 2 hours, like crakers or a granola bar. I only toook my vitamins at night, skipped anything that even sort of turned me off, and kept dressing in layers. Someone being cold made it worse, sometimes hot.

Also, fresh air helped. I found when I was inside for tooo long I got sicker.

I agree with the fresh air theory too -
And can someone tell me how Unisom isn't going to make you sleepy?
Isn't is a sleeping pill? I'm tired enough and on the verge of having full blown MS...

Unisom. It's the only thing that worked for me and I tried pretty much everything else (non-Rx), except acupuncture.

You might not need a full tablet. Start with half a tab of the SleepTabs (with doxylamine succinate), not the SleepGels. Try it at night right before you go to bed if you're worried about it making you too sleepy. Half a tablet at night was enough to keep me okay (not great, but functional) for the entire next day. You can take a little more or less, depending on your needs, some women do half a tab at night and half a tab in the morning. Eventually I was down to 1/4 tab every other day. It made a huge difference--I went from throwing up 8-10 times a day to no vomiting at all.

In Canada they sell Dicletin/Bendectin, which is Unisom combined with B6. You can take your Unisom with some B6, but for me I found the B6 gave me stomach cramps, so the Unisom was better alone.

Check with your OB/midwife, of course, before trying it.

B6 got rid of my ms completely and it was pretty severe. I take 100 mg at night before bed and 100 mg again when I get up. Works great and I like that it's not a drug.

Mmmm, nummers, I'm getting some good ideas from this thread!

Biting a lemon seems to help me! I don't know, something about the sour and the acids staves off the nausea for a few moments at least.

I've had ms in all 5 of my pregnancies...and expect I'll have it in this one, too. Zofran worked really well for me the last 3 times, including my 3rd pregnancy where I had hyperemesis. The thing the sucked for my about the Zofran were the horrible headaches and constipation. I also had luck with an otc med called Emetrol. With my girls I could get away with extra B6, the Emetrol, and sea bands.

I have offered many people the cost of my co-pay if they would just puke for me. So far, no takers...... But I just KNOW it would make me feel better
