DS' current obsession is geckos. he is in love with them. (7) he wants me to plan a unit on geckos for him and i'm having a brain fart.

i found a couple of DVDs and books on reptiles. i found a series of books called "gecko and stinky" i think he will love.. but i need help with more ideas.. i need extenders into other areas. DS is right brained and is all about hands on activities. he has trouble coming up with ideas and so he likes me to plan for him.

ideas????

There is a lizard lapbook to do at homeschoolshare.com even if you don't do all of it, it has a list of books to read and stuff.

Making a gecko out of clay sounds fun to me.

Making a trip to a zoo or pet shop with geckos would be neat.

My DD12 loves geckos and helps take care of one at a local nature center. Depending on where you live, you might be able to take your son to a reptile show and see all different sorts of geckos. Look on kingsnake.com for a list of shows.

OTmommy: is homeschoolshare.com a christian site? a lot of what i looked at last night had stuff about bible verses and discussing bible stories with literature. it's not clearly marked as such, so i was confused.

(also, the darn site kept crashing safari, i had to switch to firefox )

tell me more about "lapbooking" i have never done it or even seen it.

I think this is the best place to start for lapbooks. the site is very christian heavy but I just take that which I want and leave the rest

I would probably look at reptiles in art, perhaps do a mosaic sculpture inspired by Gaudi's fountain (dragon? lizard?) in Parc Guell, Barcelona.

Geography -- where do geckos live? How are the different kinds of geckos well-adapted to the places where they live? Maybe he could put on a little performance for your family in which he pretends to be a gecko living in different parts of the world and shows how his life would differ in each place? Write a letter-exchange between geckos living in different parts of the world in which they're telling their relatives about their lives?

Geckos apparently have interesting night vision characteristics, I would think some science experiments might be possible to explore how that works differently from human vision.
