Rash and Diapering Questions

Hi. My DD is 2 and has had a yeast rash on her little bum for several months. During the time this first occurred I was w/o internet access and went it alone with the ped, who told me that she would have this rash until she was out of diapers. I was told to treat it with the Lotrimin anti-fungal creme and have been doing that. It goes, and comes. But lately has been more persistent, and it is painful for her, cuz she tells me when I do diaper changes and she says "hurt" when I wipe her. We've been using disposables because CD wasn't really an option for various reasons earlier in her life.

The background is: We were going great with part-time EC until around 9mos, lots of catches. Then our world was upended and I stopped. We continued to communicate about 'potty' by ASL, and now she tells me (verbally) sometimes when she pee's in her diaper and always when it's poo. I started giving her lots of diaper free time so her skin could breath after the rash showed up. I thought maybe she was ready to resume potty learning. But she started holding her urine until I would diaper her again, for 5 hours at a time even. So after it was suggested she might not be ready for PL yet, I've backed way off on the diaper-free time. Which leaves us with this persistent rash. The diaper free time helped with the rash and was part of my motivation to get her out of diapers.

I just want to get rid of this rash, really that is my main concern. I am finally in a situation where we could actually CD. But I don't know where to start there, or if we should even switch. What should I do?

Have you tried treating the yeast internally? Things I would do would be getting good bacteria into her system through probiotics and also limiting her sugar (and yours if she is nursing) to a bare minimum as yeast thrives on it.

Externally, you could try gentian violet. I haven't tried it myself but many people say it works well for them, except it does stain things purple.

She doesn't get much sugar. She gets some juice, today we are eating cornbread that I put sugar in. But generally, we don't get much sugar in our diet. We aren't nursing if that makes a difference. I also try to get yogurt or kefir in her diet daily. It's always some version of sweetened though. I don't eat plain yogurt, and am pretty sure she wouldn't either. So I guess we aren't sugar-free. But it's so darn hard to completely escape that stuff!

I'll look around to see where I could get gentian violet. Thank you fruitfulwomb.

Keep the suggestions coming though.
