Need help with my diaper stash

I am due in January with a baby girl, and about to tackle CDing for the first time. A friend of mine lent me a bunch of the prefold and AIO diapers she used for the newborn stage and I am making some purchases. I plan to use both prefolds and covers and pocket diapers. I am going to use the sposies I got at my baby shower until the meconium is gone and I am feeling up to doing laundry again. I want to sample some OS pockets before making my big purchase (probably later next year once she's grown out of the prefolds I have). If I like the prefolds I will also buy the next size up with covers once I get to that point). Bulk isn't a big issue for me (in case she is small and I am folding the small prefolds to fit for a while). I figure I'll be doing laundry every 2-3 days.

Here's what I have:
1 newborn prowrap cover
1 newborn kushies AIO
18 green edged (old) GMD prefolds
6 small prowrap covers
1 small thirsties cover
1 small FB pocket diaper
5 small kushies AIOs
12 medium FB pocket diapers
1 under the nile (fitted? With a snap in insert. Probably a medium size)
1 nikki wool wrap cover (tag says 24m)
1 superdo insert
8 miscellaneous doublers and inserts
20 fleece and microfiber liners (more for moisture wicking than absorbency)
6 two sided wipes

Plan to purchase:
1 dozen small yellow edged GMD prefolds
1 dozen newborn orange edged GMD prefolds
1 XS thirsties cover
12 two sided wipes
10 flannel wipes
Large diaper pail liner
Medium planet wise wet bag
2 pack/sample pack FBOS
3 pack/sample pack OS smartipants
1 tall kitchen trash can for diaper pail

I was planning to get a diaper sprayer, but they are more expensive than I realized...so I need to search around a bit more for a better deal.

What do you think? Will I have enough while she is young to do laundry every 2-3 days? 1 dz newborn and 30 small prefolds. 28 wipes. Then of course I will have the sized and OS pockets to sample before investing in those more costly options.

Thanks ladies!!

I think your stash sounds good. That's about what I did when I first started CDing, and it worked out well for me. Good luck mama and congrats on your new LO when the time comes

I'm thinking you'll need some more newborn covers, maybe 3-4 more. I only see one on your list so far, and the thirsties XS covers fit bigger than other NB covers so it's likely to be too big at first.

The diaper sprayer you won't need until your little one has non-breastmilk food, so you can wait for a bit. I've also heard of handy folks making their own from parts you can find at the hardware store (I think it was on diaperswappers.com).

here is a how to make your own diaper sprayer.

my dh made us one & the parts cost about $20. we used it right from the start, so I could skip the prerinse before I washed. I washed at a laundromat & a prerinse would have ment paying for a whole extra cycle. I am also not a big fan of stains & had no place to 'sun them out'.

you may want some more wipes, but you could also use cheap baby washcloths

I used preemie pfs until my son was like 4 months? And now hes 2 and still in infant pfs. Id say you need 4-6 more NB covers (like imse vimse or thirsties--these both run big so id get preemie), more wipes and skip the diaper sprayer. bummis makes a better cover than proraps--JMO. Id get NB for sure. My son was 9.2 at birth and didnt get into xs thirsties covers til 2 months.

Id have 2 xs aios for outings and poss consider some fitteds for early days. A lot of people like kissaluvs size 0 and i strongly recommend buying from the thirsties outlet.

Thanks for all the suggestions!

It sounds like I need more newborn covers. I have been worried about spending too much money on tiny stuff in case she never wears it! That is why I decided on just one dozen newborn prefolds and the rest size small/yellow edged.

How do you feel about wraps and covers that can't be wiped out for a newborn. Are they more likely to need a full wash with each use? One of the things my friend liked about the prowraps she is loaning me is that she could wipe them clean and lay out to dry between uses. I also like that I don't have to snappi or pin and can just trifold. I am making orders from greenmountaindiapers.com and kellyscloset.com (local to me so free shipping!). I'd like to keep it to these two places rather than paying shipping for an order of just covers.

The do it yourself diaper sprayer is a great idea. My DH is very handy with stuff like that so I think that is what we will do.

i would not recommend trifolding with a newborn -that bf poo will be everywhere. i always did the jellyroll and snappid and that way you are likely to be able to use the same cover.

My DD2 was 8lbs and she wore the newborn size Imse Vimse for about 2 months, so well worth it I'd say. The new IV softwrap with snaps is really, really awesome, the best cover I have ever used, fits over snappied or trifolded prefolds and just about any fitted.

Those orange PFs are tiny - I'm not sure if you have other kids or have any inkling as to baby size, but I bought 18 of those for Sam and never used them, way too small. I'd stick with the yellow edge. I would definately pick up some XS thirsties covers (4 or so). You can wipe them clean if no poo and they fit awesome.
You might want some more wipes - think 10 changes a day for a newborn, 2 wipes a change....
You can make them out of those flannel receiving blankets you probably have 23729835 of...
Also, I too am a big fan of the kissaluv 0s... they fit great and held everything in.
Make sure to stock up on some fleece pants to wear as covers as well -

I believe the Bummis Super Brites are wipe-able on the inside (as opposed to the Bummis Super Whisper Wraps which are cloth on the inside). Plus they have gussets which are supposed to help keep messes in.

I agree that tri-folding won't be any help with newborn poo - I'd get a pair of pins or a snappi just in case you decide to use it after one too many cleanups. They're fairly inexpensive.

Thanks everyone!

I am so indecisive, and there are so many choices!!

I decided to go with a dozen newborn prefolds in case she is small- and if we barely use them than I hear they make good doublers. I also bought a dozen yellow edged. I bought 3 different newborn and small covers that we can use under 6-13 pounds as well, also a snappi.

I also bought sample packs of the FBOS and smarti pants OS to see what I like. This should get me through several months depending on her size (since I also have a small and 12 medium FB pockets)...then I can decide whether to buy a couple dozen more prefolds or more OS pockets.

I would like to try some fitteds, but I've already spent too much! I am happy to have my wet bags (just got them today) for the diaper pail, diaper bag, and a wipe sized one. I ended up with 30 wipes, but I also have a bunch of baby wash cloths that I will be more likely to use as wipes than washcloths.

I have my mom's old sewing machine that I need to wash up and learn to use- then I could make my own double sided or double layer flannel wipes.

I also got Charlies soap to try for detergent since my regular detergent uses enzymes. Now to prep all these new diapers!! It looks like the pockets just need a hot or warm wash with a bit of detergent recommended but not required. The hemp inserts, wipes, and prefolds all say to wash 5-10 times in hot water with a little detergent, drying every 1-2 washes.

Do I need to prewash my covers at all? I know they don't need to be 'prepped' but should I wash them with the pockets?

I read through quickly, but what stood out most to me was not enough wipes. We have around 50 - and with putting them in diaper bags, purses, and on the changing table, I would still run out sometimes. If you can sew up your own, I think that'd be the best option. Mine are two layers of flannel sewn into a variety of sizes.
