Can you tell there's mec in the waters before water breaks?

I have a friend who's having an induction right now because at her BPP appointment she was told there were heavy traces of mec in the water. She didn't say anything about her water breaking, (or being broken). Is it even possible to tell that with her waters intact? I'm not sure what all a BPP entails, but I thought it was mostly just an ultrasound and monitoring contractions/heart rate for a while.

Biophysical profile (BPP) is with ultrasound- they measure fluid level, check for movement, practice breathing, etc. They can't be sure, but they can see if there's "debris" in the fluid, which is most likely meconium. I think you're thinking of NST (non-stress test).

It could also be vernix.

Your friend ought to ask her doctor how the drugs used to induce birth will affect her already (possibly) stressed baby, so she can make an informed decision about going through with an induction.
