General anesthesia versus Concious sedation?

I know there are a lot of threads regarding this, but I can't seem to find any definitive evidence as to which is safer-my dd (32 months) needs three cavities filled and another 2-3 examined/scraped out? (unclear on this).

THe doctor is recommending doing general anesthesia so he can get it done all at once versus doing in-office sedation with Verset. He would like to use a papoose with that, but I already said no- I would hold her. Dd has both screamed and thrashed through a visit and sat perfectly still while the dentist looked at her teeth, so I have no idea which way she will go. The thought of GA terrifies me, but from some of the reading, in-office sedation isn't really that much safer, espeically since it would take multiple times to get it all done.

Please help!!!

As fas as I know, GA still has greater risks....that's why we will most probably go with in-office sedation (DS is 30 months old and needs extractions and crowns).

We were just talking about the topic in another thread a couple of days ago, maybe you'd like to have a look and "join us" there

Ds had general anesthesia in an outpatient OR. I believe that is safest from all of my research and critical care nursing experience.

Sedation has fewer risk factors but I, personally, doubt the ability of the staff at the dentist to adequately monitor the sedated patient and deal with any emergencies.

When I had my wisdom teeth out I opted for sedation at a day surgery facility with an anaesthetist and OT staff including recovery staff. If that had not been an option I would have chosen GA.

BTW, if a person is adequately sedated there should not be any thrashing about. If they can thrash they need more sedation. If they can still thrash then sedation is not sufficient for the procedure and they need GA.
