best clothes brands/types for skinny babies?

Thread Starter
I see threads on here pretty often talking about clothes for skinny kids and toddlers but nothing for skinny babies and I was hoping someone else has BTDT? Anyone else with a beanpole of a kid?
My daughter is in the 73rd percentile for height but only the 19th for weight with dainty little shoulders so I am having quite a bit of trouble keeping clothes on her. It would be slightly easier if she was just small all over but she isn't and she can't just walk around naked in this weather. Sleepers that are long enough are so wide that her arms slip out of the sleeves. Baby legs barely touch her thighs so they won't stay up. Tights work but dresses that are long enough fall off her shoulders and look like tents. And let's not even talk about pants. What have other mamas done about this? What brands seem to work? What types of clothes? So far I have had my best luck with Gap brand leggings and Carter's onesies (bless them, they are like long narrow tubes). Zutano overalls worked well for a while but those are so pricey only grandma will be buying them. What has everyone else got?

Carters onesies are great. I haven't been able to find anything with feet to really work. In this cold weather, DD generally wears a long sleeved onesie, pants, leggings (to cover where the pants don't, and socks, and sometimes another shirt or sweater.

I second the Carters onesies with pants... we have a long little one as well with dainty shoulders and she's outgrowing things in length b4 they even come close to fitting width or in arms/shoulders.

Carters are the only onesies I've found that really fit. A few sleepers do as well, but any other brands make her look like she's swimming in them.

Zutano is good too, but we have the same issue - not made of $$... I do LOVE their stuff though!

I like the Vitamins brand sleepers - they fit my DD's skinny shoulders, and they're cut really wide around the diaper area so it accomodates her cloth diapers well too. I don't knows where they sell them, I've gotten a few as handmedowns. They're the cutest sleepers I've seen on her.

My problem is that pants that are long enough to cover her legs are too big at the waist! So I solved that problem by knitting a simple pair of leg warmers for DD, which I always put on her when she wears pants. These cover up the inevitable strip of exposed leg where the pants are too short. And they look darn cute, too.

I avoid the "tent dress" look with DD by putting her in sleeveless summer dresses that are too short but fit her at the shoulders. I layer these over a warm long-sleeved onesie, thick cotton tights, and the ubiquitous leg warmers, then add a sweater and warm hat. Tada! She looks put together, and nobody knows she's wearing last summer's outgrown dress.

I also rely pretty heavily on the Carters onesies, though they're so narrow I have trouble squeezing them around DD's big diapers!

I too have to suggest that you'll have the best luck with Carters.

Have you tried Carters sleepers? They are super slim and long with small arm holes at the shoulders. They are designed to be very trim. You could put a cute shirt or sweater on top if she needs to be fancied up for going out or special events and the sleeper will help to hold the shirt on her shoulders. It'll get easier and you'll have more selection as she gets older I'm sure.

I had the opposite but similar problem with DS - he was really chunky so everything cut into him, whether it be babylegs at the thigh, socks at the calf or pants at the waist. In order to get pants, even stretchy leggings or joggers, that were big enough at the waist, I had to go to a size that was wayyyyy too long. From about 4-10 months, he lived in sleepers in either solid colours or subtle prints and I'd just put a cute sweatshirt or tshirt on top if I wanted him to look more like he was in "daytime" clothes.

I have a chunky baby (for the moment), but he has a long torso and I found that American Apparel lap tees are longer and come in cute colors. The sizes run small. The 6-12 month size is a bit tight on him now (he's 18 pounds and 27 inches), but the length is still good.

Osh Kosh is also good for slim ones.
