Reusable Chore Charts

I have to admit it, our family needs an external motivator for getting things done around the house, and I need a constant reminder of routine that's not my nagging. We have a very tight schedule on weekdays - about an hour in the morning and 2-3 hours at night that we're home and awake. So I'm dreaming up chore charts, and trying to decide what materials/things I/we can use to make them. Some ideas I have are posterboard and little velcro on thingies (of some sort) to put up on the chart when a mission is accomplished. With velcro patches on the chart for the items that need done. I reckon that could get costly, if velcro is costly. Is it?

Have you made one? Do you have an even better idea?

I made a weekly set of chore charts via MS word. Each day would have a different chore, like clean bathroom, or mop kitchen, plus daily chores - empty dishwasher, feed cats, clean litterbox. I just printed them and then laminated the set so we could use dry-erase markers to check off what we finished during the day.

ETA: we are also on a tight schedule, DH is at home, and I work all day, so we're always passing each other and its a nice reminder to both of us as to what got done and where help was needed if the day got tanked.

At the beginning of the school year, I found wipe-off chore charts at the dollar store. For a dollar. They were basically a matrix you fill in, with spots to check off when a task is completed.

Ooh, so you can write on laminated paper with Dry Erase markers? Sweet!

Jooj, I wonder if I'd be so lucky to find such a thing at the dollar store today?

Good, I was planning on doing all these wacky things to make ours work. Phew!

We print everything like that out, and then stick it in a plastic sleeve and put it on the fridge and use dry erase markers.

Wet erase markers (like your high school teacher used with the overhead projector) are also good - they don't smell as bad. They wipe off with a wet rag. Some dry erase markers will stain clothes PERMANENTLY - so do check the label if you have little ones who might get into them.
