nylon netting alternatives for scrubbies?

I found these wonderful crocheted dish scrubbies at a farmer's market, and then found out you can buy the nylon netting to crochet your own.

I would really like to find a biodegradable alternative to these, as I don't like the idea of tossing them away (or giving them to people who will then toss them away) when they won't rot (they could even unwind and become a hazard for wildlife b/c of the netting).

Does anybody know of an alternative fibre to nylon that is biodegradable?

himp yarn

also, I would suggest going to the yarn store and touching things.

Not biodegradable but I recycle mesh onion bags to make scrubbies. At least it keeps them out of the land fill a little longer.

I'm assuming you meant "hemp"?

Good idea. I tried using a rough, scratchy wool but it just felted with use and got less scratchy. Next time I'm at my LYS I will ask.
