"page turner" rec's

Thread Starter
I'm looking for some book rec's....I used to love to read and would have no problem getting into a book and finishing it. For the past couple of years though, I have been having issues finishing the books I have started. So, I'm thinking I need a good page turner that grabs you right from the beggining to get my feet wet again. Something like a bridget jones or girls guide to hunting and fishing type...any ideas?

Twilight series
Host (also by Stephanie Meyers but a stand alone book)
Hunger Games and its sequel Catching Fire
Any of the Charlaine Harris Southern Vampire books- although a bit steamy
The Lovely Bones (as told by the Ghost of a girl that met a violent end though so some might not like it for that)
Prodigal Summer by Kingsolver

All these I ate up in a day or two

After DS was born I also went through a phase where I found it difficult to read. Many of the books I did read were about parenting or health, so I got out the habit of reading just for fun.

I second the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyers. Even if you usually don't like vampire books they are real page-turners.
I went on to Charlaine Harris Southern Vampire or (Sookie Stackhouse) series however I should mention not everyone likes them. A few of my friends who liked the Twilight Saga hated Sookie Stackhouse. You have to like murder mysteries to like them.

If you want Fantasy with more substance but still want a page-turner, I am currently reading the Newford series by Charles De Lint and can't put them down. I find his books are not as dark or violent as some of the Urban Fantasy. I find them more like magical realism.

If you don't want fantasy, You might like the Stephanie Plum series by Janet Evanovich. They are light fun reads.

Again, if you want a pager turner that is deeper, try The Poisonwood Bible by Barbara Kingsover.

A Long Way from Home by Connie Briscoe

"Fingersmith" by Sarah Waters. I also found her book "Tipping the Velvet" to be quite the page-turner, even though I had already seen the BBC series.

Anything by PD James - mostly British mysteries (I think Children of Men is more sci-fi). Right now I'm reading A Certain Justice which is pretty juicy. (I'm not really familiar with the British legal system, which is definitely a big part of the book I'm currently reading, but I'm able to follow well enough to enjoy the story.)

I finished The Prince of Tides this fall and I was really grabbed by it. It's older, though, so maybe you've already read it. My husband's reading it now and he just commented today how much he's into it, and he's really not a big reader. I've heard good things about South of Broad, Conroy's new one, but I haven't read it.

On the more literary end of the spectrum, I really liked both of Jeffrey Eugenides' books (The Virgin Suicides and Middlesex). They were heavy, but definitely page turners for me. In the same vein is The Corrections by Jonathan Franzen. So delicious.

This Organic Life by Joan Dye Gussow was the first "crunchy" book I read. I couldn't put it down.

The Black Dagger Brotherhood series has been a page turner for me. I can't wait to read the next one.

Any and all Jennifer Weiner books are fantastic. I get really engrossed in her characters.

For something really light and witty and delectable, try The Family Man by Eleanor Lipman. Gay guy who was married long ago comes back in contact with the stepdaughter he briefly adopted. Lots of funny romantic entanglements and sparkling banter and a sweet story.

I just ordered The Family Man from the library and I am currently reading The Pillars of the Earth. It is soooo good and page turn-y, but very long indeed.
