Coconut oil and pregnancy (re: weight) x-post

It was recommended that I x-post this here so...here I am.

So my family and I really got started on using/consuming coconut oil for pretty much everything over the last couple of years. We love the stuff, as it has about a million uses and we utilize pretty much all of them. Anyway, I had been taking it straight for weight loss/maintenance for months after DD2 was born but then couldn't stomach it anymore and so I started putting it in capsules to take that way (yes, I know you can buy them in capsules, but when you have empty caps and gallons of CO, which is the more frugal thing to do? ).

Anyway, over the past month and a half in this pregnancy I started taking more CO than I had been (which was just whenever I'd cook with it and the occasional capsule or two). I started taking at least 2-3 capsules a day (because I feel really good when I get enough..warmer, less likely to crave sweets, etc), and then I found myself to be cooking/baking with it a lot more and so overall I was just consuming a lot more than I had been.

Will CO consumption during pregnancy have the same "weight loss" effect as it does outside of pregnancy? The reason I wonder is that I've been able to curiously maintain my weight for the last 4ish weeks which is really uncommon for me in pregnancy, especially at this point (oh, and the fact that according to how I've eaten over the last couple of those weeks, I should be up at LEAST a few more lbs! )...the last 2 times I generally start gaining early on and don't stop until I'm up about 45ish lbs (I'm 5'8" and 140-145ish pre-pg, and have gained that very amount each time no matter what I did during the pregnancy...despite living and eating MUCH healthier last time) and I give birth. I have also gained the weight with each pregnancy at the EXACT same rate (like to the pound! It's crazy!), including this pregnancy up until recently, so I guess I assumed that my body needed every one of those 45 lbs, even though they were more difficult to get off last time (they peeled off what felt like immediately after DD1).

I can't seem to find any info on this anywhere...most sources are mainstream and say to avoid CO since it's "bad" but I don't agree with that so it doesn't really help me out. I'm not worried that I haven't gained in a little while (I've already got plenty on, and have plenty of time to go LOL), just surprised considering my past trends and the fact that I expected to put on a few pounds over the last few weeks since I haven't been eating well at all!

I'm not sure about taking the capsules while pregnant but my consumption of coconut oil increased during my pregnancy. I was on my way to gaining 40+ lbs like with my girls before I changed to TF style eating. The weight gain slowed dramatically and I ended up only gaining 28 lbs.

I think it's absolutely okay to continue consuming coconut oil. As I said, I'm not sure about continuing taking the capsules, but I can't see how that would hurt. GL!

I think that CO helps with weight loss b/c it kills the yeast associated with leaky gut, high cholesterol, and over-all body inflammation. I don't think that it can help you loose an unhealthy amount of weight. This is just my own personal theory. I wouldn't hesitate to eat as much as I was craving during pregnancy. If you have unhealthily low weight gain, then you should re-evaluate the situation, but until then, I wouldn't worry.

Since coconut oil is the staple fat for many people in tropical countries, I'd say it has to be fine.

My thought is that your body is using the good food (i.e. coconut oil) more efficiently and you just don't need to gain weight at the moment for whatever reason.

I consumed a lot during my second pregnancy and only gained 28 lbs. compared to the 48 with my first pregnancy (granted I also had retained some of that weight going into the second pregnancy). I know I looked and felt so much better. I was all baby rather than baby and a whole lot of padding

i need to try this. i do cook with coconut oil, i want to try adding more to my food or just eating spoonfuls. i gained 60lb in each of my pregnancies, despite a change in my eating for the second one. i would love if i could keep it down this time, 40lb would be great!

I would not increase my consumption of coconut oil if you have/had mercury fillings in your teeth.

CO kills candida which binds with mercury to keep it out of circulation. If you are killing off candida, you are releasing mercury to redeposit into organs, brain and baby.

WuWei,

if you happen to have a good internet link or book recommendation that has to do with the candida/mercury thing, i would love to know about it. i had read before that folks with mercury fillings were more likely to have candida problems, but i've never heard before that candida actually binds with the mercury.

An informed site for Candida Mercury issues is the Candida forum at Healthy Awareness. Not sure how much they address nursing/pregnant mamas though. http://www.healthyawareness.com/

Tuberose is another informative site: http://tuberose.com/Mercury.html

Andy Cutler's book "Amalgam Illness" is the mercury removal bible.

There is a great thread around here somewhere titles "have you lost weight with the coconut oil", and it is true , it helps you loose weight. Well for me it does. For that reason, I stay away from extra coconut oil. (none now since my ds is allergic)

Sure oils are very important, but if you are concerned about the weight loss, don't get rid of the oils altogether, make sure you replace it with another oil.

That's the thread that got me started on coconut oil a year ago. It definitely worked for me.

I'm now not so sure about the CO and my weight during this pregnancy. I still haven't gained in the couple weeks since I was curious about this, even though I shamefully admit my diet has been crap and I haven't exercised in a good month or so since the SPD got so bad. I *should* have gained like 5-7 lbs at LEAST. I'm starting to wonder...
