Decrease question..

I'm working on this pattern here:

I'm confused when it comes to decreasing for the back of the hat. It just says

For the back of the hat continue RSS. In each odd row decrease 10 sts. Continue for 8 rows.

I tried decreasing every 3rd or 4th stitch and it ended up looking "holey". Any suggestions on how to avoid this? Thanks!

Sorry, not sure why it would be holey. What dec are you using? k2tog?

I think it's a confusing pattern. I read it that the last 8 rows are purled, and you're decreasing 10 sts every other row, so you'll be decreasing a total of 40 sts. I'd go to knittinghelp.com and look at purl decreases (I see SSP on the page.) I very rarely decrease in a purl row, so I can't help you with what might be going wrong. But decreases typically don't form holes.
