Why give prunes?

Is there any reason to give my 7 mo old DS prunes if he isn't constipated? My baby goes plenty already.

I never did unless they were backed up. I think in the two kids, that only happened once though (and I'm not sure with who...)

Nope. In fact, even if they are constipated, giving them extra fiber (flax seeds in their cereal, for example) is much better -- their bowels don't learn to rely on the laxitive of the prunes.

I bought some prunes in addition to many different foods for dd to try when we started solids, and wound up giving them to her when she hadn't pooped for a day or so. She wound up LOVING them, kind of funny. She's not been constipated so I didn't give them for that reason necessarily, but just as something for her to try, and she gobbled them up.

We (as a family) eat prunes because they're yummy! DD1 and dd2 think of them as "candy".
