Nightweaning working!

Ok, I should be working right now, but I had to post this. So, DS is 29 months old and I am 8 weeks pregnant. Up until a few weeks ago, DS woke to nurse a minumum of twice per night. Just after ovulation for a few days per month, it was constant night nursing as my supply dipped. Then with the pregnancy, this was a nightly occurance on terribly sore nipples.

Finally last Saturday night (Dec 12) at around 4:00 AM, I had had enough! So, I told DS that the ninees had to go to sleep. WWIII broke loose and he screamed and kicked and would not be consoled until I walked the halls with him. Eventually we settled on the couch and spend the remainder of an uncomfortable night there. Then Sunday I talked with him quite a bit and told him that when he went to bed that the ninees had to go to bed too and that I would nurse him again when the sun came up. He cried a bit about it but went to bed well. That night was really bad and I almost called the whole thing off. We spent the majority of the night either walking, rocking, or on the couch and were totally exhausted the next day. I gave in and nursed him around 5:00 AM and told him the sun was coming up soon. Then Monday night, we did not leave the bedroom, but had two pretty big crying sessions. It broke my heart because he kept saying that he needed nursies bad and "please mama", but I gave him a lot of cuddles and love and he eventually went to sleep pretending to be kitties in the barn. Then Tuesday night was similar, but better. Last night, he only asked to nurse once and threw about a 5 minute tantrum which ended with us pretending to be elephants sleeping

This morning, he said to me "Quinn doesn't need nursies at night anymore!" He really seemed proud of himself.

Congratulations! I went through that with my Quinn, even with the "I NEED it!!" when I refused! I was amazed that the tantrums didn't last that long once I stood firm, maybe a few nights. I had an alarm clock that I used and told her that when it went off, she could nurse, so she pretty much pounced on me when the alarm would sound, it was very Pavlovian. But to get the uninterrupted sleep was a revelation! I'm happy for you, that is such a milestone!
