knoxville or East TN homebirth MW

I'm in Knoxville and pregnant with baby #2. I LOVED my OB and with DS and she was super-supportive on my desire to have a natural birth. unfortunately, due to the circumstances surrounding his birth, that didn't happen. As much as I love my OB I think an out of hospital birth is the best way to get what I want. I have taken a tour of Lisa Ross, but there's something in my head that really wants a homebirth. Anyone have any personal stories/recommendations they care to share for Knoxville area midwives who do homebirths? I've seen Lisa Coomer's website, but I don't really know where else to look and I'd really like to hear personal experiences.
thanks so much!

I have been told that Tamara Flowers, CNM, who contracts at Lisa Ross, is starting to do homebirths. She is awesome. She attended my water birth at Lisa Ross and was just crucial in getting me through it all drug free.

I like Lisa Coomer so far - I can probably let you know around February how she is at births. She seems fine with skipping prenatal tests and procedures or getting them set up with the backup OB, depending on what I want. She seems quite flexible whenever I talk with her about things at the birth - that was why I picked her when I was looking at midwives, she seemed the most open to whatever the mother wants. I was seeing her before my miscarriage earlier in the year, and she was nice about things - she even gave us a credit from what we'd paid for appointments so far, towards the next pregnancy, which helped us a lot. She is reassuring and positive when you're worried about stuff.

I went to Lisa Ross for prenatal care with my son, but when he ended up breech they couldn't attend the birth, and we ended up scrambling at the last minute to find somewhere to go. That's one more reason to go with homebirth, the midwives tend to have more leeway.

Hmm, there are at least a couple of midwives in the area, and some in Chattanooga who travel.... I think the name of one near here was Debi Church? I never met with her, but she has a book full of information that she sends out.

I'm in NE TN (near Johnson City) and use DeEtte Nicholson. I know she travels to Asheville, NC for many of her patients, so she may be willing to travel to Knoxville as well.

Looking for a homebirth midwife

Hi, I'm new to the board. I'm not expecting yet, but doing some research. I would love to have a homebirth with our next. Does anyone know how far Lisa Coomer will travel? According to Google she is the closest midwife to us, but she is still 82 miles away! Thanks

Hmm, I don't know for sure, but you could email her and ask. Her email is on her website. Several midwives I talked to were willing to come all the way to Knoxville from Chattanooga, or from North Carolina, so it isn't too farfetched. It's also possible that she might know of a midwife closer to you who's hard to find on google. Some aren't really listed.

Thanks for the reply hapersmion and the advise. I did e-mail Lisa Coomer this morning and she responded within hours. She said she usually will travel 1 1/2 hrs from her office, so I fall within that distance. I could have done a dance, I am so excited to know I have an option!

Cool beans! I have helped at a couple births with Lisa, she is great. So's Debi, but she is 1.5 hrs south of Knoxville- halfway to Chattanooga. Lisa is the closest. Do you happen to have the email addy of the Midwife at Lisa Ross who is starting to do homebirths? I would like to meet her, as I am due to take my NARM exam in Feb, and if I pass, I will finally be a CPM, and would like someone to work with...

If any of you have contact information for Tamara Flowers, could you please PM me with it? I've been looking into Lisa Ross, but I'm not sold on it. It would be nice to find a HB midwife closer than the ones I have been looking into.

I realize this is an old thread, but I was hoping someone had more information on whether or not Tamara Flowers was doing homebirths and if anyone has her information? I'll probably be moving to Knoxville soon and would like to know my options. My midwife in Nashville suggested one to me but she's an hour away and I have very fast labors so I was hoping to find someone closer. Thanks!
