Hi, my name is Rochelle and I am a sugar addict

Now...I've admitted I have a problem, but how do I go about fixing it? I literally crave sugary products and I can tell they have a huge impact on me. I am about to have extensive dental work done (that I am paying for out of pocket) and I know that sugar is a huge contributor to the decay I have. I need ideas on things I can have in the house to go to when I need my fix. Any help is greatly appreciated.

-unrefined sugars: They're great for helping wean off sugar, as they have their natural minerals so their sugars aren't quite as bad for you and don't affect many people as strongly, they aren't as sweet so your taste buds wean off the sweet taste. ex: honey, molasses, maple syrup

-nuts: once you stop eating refined sugar, you will notice that nuts have a nice sweet taste. They also have fat which helps stop your sugar cravings (sugar cravings can actually be cravings for healthy fats, as well as part of the sugar addiction.) my go-to dessert for everyday is peanut butter, coconut oil, and raisins. Very little sugar in it, but coconut oil and peanut combine to taste very sweet. a handful or two of almonds after dinner can also help combat dessert cravings

-getting all sugar out of the house. if its not there, its easier to tell yourself no to getting in the car, driving to the store, and buying cookies or ice cream or sugary snacks, that it is to say no when they are in in the pantry or freezer.

-snack foods free of refined sugar for snacking: dried fruit, crackers and cheese or hummus or something, veggies and aoili, whatever you like

good luck. sugar addictions are very hard to deal with, and I'm sure you can do it. recognizing their affect and your addiction to them is a great deal of it. (not all of it, I definitely fall off the no-sugar bandwagon occasionally, but even falling off and getting back on, I eat a lot less sugar. And I get back on sooner and sooner eachtime

I am a recovering sugar addict.

This book is awesome for snacks that trick your body into thinking it's getting a sugar rush. Some of the recipes I make over and over. She's very practical and realistic:

Also, this is a book that really helps you understand why you crave sugar. It was very enlightening:

I'm a sugar addict, too, and it's really stressing me out. I have no clue how to get off...I feel like such a crack addict! I'm working on it. I haven't had any chocolate today. I have, however, had a coke. Keeping an eye on this thread.

do you feel bad/moody/grumpy etc if you don't get your usual sugar fix every so often?

oh and headaches?

I have found that skipping the sugar at breakfast time has helped me not crave it during the day. Especially a filling breakfast like with an omelet. You can use a variety of good ingredients in you omelet - fave is spinach, cheddar, very thinly sliced sauteed onion, with two eggs. It's filling and helps avoid that urge to eat sugar. If I have too much sugar, I get issues with yeast so am trying to avoid it when possible. Also, raw garlic help with any cravings. Try making garlic tea when you have a craving coming on. It really helps!
