My new bedroom is a hallway. Decorating advice welcome!

We are moving our bed into the dormer nook upstairs and have put up a wall to give DD her own room up there. So essentially our bedroom is in a hallway now (but I have a walk in closet and the move enables us to have a dining room for sit down family meals which I am SO excited about ).

We have sloped ceilings/half walls. What color would you paint it? I need some interior decorating advice.

DD's room will be dark violet on the full wall (no sloped ceiling) and closet door, with the rest of the room/ sloped ceiling a light lilac color.

I have no idea what to do with our sleeping area (I can't really bring myself to call it a bedroom).

The bed will fill the entire nook. It's a bit cave like. Then we have the hallway to the stairs and the hallway to the closet. That's it.

WWYD color wise?

Depends on what feeling you're trying to go for. Do you want to keep it light and airy or do you want to play up the fact that it's kind of cave like and cozy? Whatever you decide I would keep the walls and ceiling, at least the sloped parts, the same color otherwise it will start looking really choppy and busy. If it were me I'd likely paint the nook that the bed is in one color, not super dark but more in the midtones and then paint the two hallways a bit lighter. The two hallways would be the same color. If you're looking at paint chips that have a range of colors from light to dark I'd pick two colors that are at least two spaces apart. IOW, there's one color in between the two you end up using so you can see that there's a definite difference in the color.

An easy way to come up with a color palate/combination is to look at a cool piece of fabric or a pillow or piece of artwork and choose what colors you like from it and go from there.

I like your ideas. What does IOW mean? Is skipping 2 colors an official decorating law I should follow?

I want a mellow, cozy feel but am tired of blue. I was thinking, like you, to do the nook in one color and the hall in another. Any thoughts?

what about either a pale, smoky violet or a deep plum, to somewhat coordinate with dd's space? only on the straight walls - the sloped walls match the ceiling. otherwise it feels like they're closing in on you. or you could keep all the walls/ceiling the same color (presumably white or cream) and just let the color be on the bed. if there is *any* floor space i'd throw down very plush, cozy runners.

fwiw, our "bedroom" is exactly the same! it does feel like its own defined space now, even though it's not complete in terms of decor. yes, you walk through it to get to the kids' room, but it's defined (by a closet that divides the two spaces) and i love feeling like i'm sleeping in a tree house. i hope you enjoy it too!

IOW= In Other Words.

It's not necessarily a law but it does help to insure that it won't look like you ran out of paint before you did the other wall and the extra you got doesn't quite match. Do you have any bedding or anything else that you're planning on using in there that is multicolored? You could pull colors from that. Green can be a cozy color if you choose more yellow based ones instead of blue based. You could also do golden yellows and oranges/rust/terra-cotta.

I think it sounds cozy! Can we see pics to get some ideas?

The dormer nook is under tarp and stuffed with boxes right now, but I will try to get some pics when we start clearing it out. We have a cape cod/bungalow, lots of little cubbyholes for rooms.

I didn't know that! It makes sense though. Our bedding is eclectic. DH is E.European and has these down feather things that have all sorts of cover styles. He eschews blankets and we never bought a proper set for the King bed we have now.

Purple/plum is my weakness. I dunno if it will feel like I just washed everything up there in purple though with DD's room. But I will look at the color samples for it.

is the bed just the bed, such that it would look like it' on a platform, or do you have a headboard/footboard also? what styles are these?

personally, i would go with creamy colors with matching bedding. then, i would put stars on the celining/low walls using rubber stamps (3 sizes) and gold ink. if i chose soft blues and blue-wites instead, i would use silver stars.

i prefer paint to wall paper, so this is inspired by wall paper, but you can paint over it if you hate it or want to change.

and, if the bed fits into the nook entirely, i would likyl curtain it off to make it a romantic spot, but also make it seem like it's own space once you are in it (rather than a hallway). i would probably hang the curtains ceiling to floor and wall-to-wall (left to right), to give them a sense of presence.

curtains and bedding could also be seasonal--either two or four depending upon how many change outs you want--but i would do a heavy wolol or velvet for winter, and then at least a sheer (like organza) for summer, and likely a cotton for spring and flannel for fall. if you wanted, you could change these up color-wise, particularly if the walls are cream.

just a thought anyway.

Just a bed. No head board: wouldn't fit and it would cover the window.

Curtain is possible and I've thought about doing something romantic with sheers.

The nook has an opening kind of shaped like the bow of a ship. It's not an arch or even open, there's like a weird folded triangularness. So the head space, is a triangle and then it squares out about waist height for us.

You can stand, but only if you're exactly in the middle. Maybe not so conducive to curtains. I also would worry about it really almost making the space seem smaller. I dunno. But I am thinking about it.

The stars sound cool!

Our bedroom isn't a nook, but it's a tiny room and the bed takes up almost all the space. I actually like it. It feels like a sleeping compartment to me.

It's painted a terra cotta color that makes it really cozy.

Thanks for all the advice! (And feel free to add more!) I will be sure to come back and post pics when we're done (3-6 months).

I'm totally picturing a room thats some fairly dark shade of purple all around, with a lighter purple (maybe like fuscia?) bedspread. I think it'd be awesome
