I have 2 questions

1. when would you let a baby sleep on the wall side of a bed on the floor?

2. we have a Humanity bed. DD sleeps next to it. But I have become very concerned about dust mites in it. Any ideas? I can't find a dust mite cover to fit it. The pillow is a long bolster type.

My DD always slept next to the wall. As long as the bed is flush against the wall with no gaps at all, I can't see why it would be a problem at any age.

You can do it on the time when his legs can already reach the floor without making too much stretch. This means that the child can take care of himself even without your eyes.
