Hi! I have a younger boy (5yo), but I'm posting over here to get info from parents that have BTDT...


If your child has a skateboard, how old was he (or she) when they first got one?

My son got a skateboard at age 5, and now he is 11. He is *really* good and it has been awesome for him. He struggles with school a lot and skateboarding has been something he has been able to be proud of and successful at.

I saw this on the new post list so I'm lurking a bit.

Our oldest is now 7 and he got his first (teeny) skateboard for his first birthday. Dh got him a full sized one at 5. He's really good for the short time he's been on one.

My older two boys got skateboards last christmas - they were 3.5 and 5.5. They aren't awesome skaters, by any means but they have fun trying (both inside on the tile, and outside on the cement). Those were definitely their favorite gift last year. I'm very glad I bought them. The boards I purchased came with helmets and pads - and had spiderman on all of them, so clearly they were for little ones, not teens.

My boys got skateboards at around age 4-5. They don't skateboard much these days ( we live in the country and have a gravel driveway), but they still enjoy playing with their boards from time to time.

My daughter got hers at six, but never really got into it, so, she uses it to sit on and watch tv.

Our Ds got his when he turned six. We went for the 'proper' skateboard from the local skateshop, even though it was more expensive. He's pretty damn good at it now, although he does need some new trucks & wheels. And he's moved on to the rip-stick, which seems to be better for flat ground...

my kids got them at 2 and 5. My little brother got one when he was 4 years old, in 1980, in snowy new hampshire. never wore a helmet or anything. He's been a pro skater for like 10 years now.

My ex-boyfriend/partner was a serious skater (but not pro) & I reckon it kept him out of all kinds of trouble. I do think he developed lower back problems from landing too hard off too many high jumps though.

DS seems content to stick to the street for now, although I did have to clean up a particularly nasty elbow scrape the other day. Days of dressings, actually, but i think it shouldn't scar up too bad... And that was from the rip-stick on a downhill, not the skateboard.

Mine didn't get theirs until they were maybe 5th or 6th grade. Before that they were more interested in bikes & rollerblades.

skating definitely helped keep my bro on the straight and narrow, too.

My ds got a skateboard and promptly dissected it... wheels, board, axles, etc.

Kids find what they want in a skateboard.

Thanks for the replies!! I was thinking that 5 would be WAY too young, but I guess we could give it a try.

He's been unbelievably good on his bike already (getting rid of training wheels, riding without using handle bars, jumping. riding the curbs)...I think he might be ok trying out a skateboard....it just gives my heart the jeebies.

I'm much more anxious watching my son on his bike than on his skateboard. But then again, he's standing on the handlebars, doing tricks on his bike while bombing down the driveway.

I'd get him some gear to go along with it and let him have at it.

I was a skater and kept a board, which has been sitting in the garage all of ds's life. He started out sitting down on it and rolling down the driveway. Then he learned to stand on it in the grass (maybe around 2 years old?). Then he moved on to standing on it on the sidewalk and actually moving. Now he's 4. He doesn't use it as much since he got a scooter for his birthday, but I say it's never to young to get one!
