This is my third homebirth and it is the first time I have attempted to bill my insurance. I had to do a lot of calling and shaking things up in the beginning of my pregnancy to get something called an out of network exception. Once I received that authorization for that, my midwife was able to bill. Her billing company submitted my claim of $4200.00 to Anthem on Novmeber 23rd and she recieved the check yesterday. When I first got the okay form Anthem to see my midwife, I was told that I would only be covered at 80%, but they paid 100% of my birth! All I have to pay is 8% to cover the billing costs. I am beyond excited and really feel I have won a HUGE battle!

Cileag-good luck! Have you already spoken with them about having a homebirth? Who is your carrier? I ask because telling your story on MDC really can help other mamas that are thinking they might try to bill.
Serenyd-Early in my pregnancy I read about a women in my state with the same carrier had gotten her homebirth covered by asking for an out of network exception and that is what made me try to get mine covered. Without having read her post I probably would have just billed my flexible spending account again! I hope someone else reads this thread and is able to get their birth covered.
