Having Fun in the Snow Without Snow Clothing?

So, we're expecting a buttload of snow tomorrow (yippee ).

Problem, DS has no snow gear. No boots, no snowpants/snowsuit. There's no way we can all just stay inside...this is way too exciting. I'm trying to figure out the best way to dress him.

My thoughts so far:
BabyLegs under legging-type pants under either jeans or sweatpants. His regular shoes (from Target) with one pair of socks (all that will fit in the shoe). Then sticking each fully-clothed leg (shoe, pants, etc.) in one of those long skinny plastic bags that the newspaper comes in. Securing the bag at the thigh with a rubber band.

He does, fortunately, have mittens and a good hat and we can do layers on top.

Anyone have other/different brilliant ideas? We're probably getting at least 12 inches.

Do you have rain boots? They work in the snow in a pinch.

Layers are awesome. You should be good for at least a half hour before you come inside to warm up and change into dry clothes. So having several sets of layers is a bonus...otherwise chuck it all in the dryer while you're drinking hot cocoa =).

My DS wears baby legs under his super long fleece sweat pants (doesn't own jeans), one pair of socks, and his rain boots. A long sleeved tee shirt under a bigger long sleeved shirt with a fleece jacket, an ear flap hat, and fleece gloves.

On our second trip out, while everything was still wet (I give great advice, I just don't always follow it), it was a long sleeved tee shirt under a sweater, under a larger hooded sweatshirt.

Plastic bags over the shoes/lower legs sounds like a great idea, but don't be too disappointed if it doesn't keep all the snow/wet out.

I'm a big fan of fleece b/c it's lightweight, even when wet, and it does a good job of repelling water, so it takes longer to feel wet on the inside. And it's great for blocking wind.

I read the title of this thread as "How to have fun in the snow without clothing"!

Anyway, where in PA are you? I have some bigger snowsuits that were given to us that dd won't fit into for at least another year or two. They are kinda girly, but if you're close by I'm more than happy to share.

eta: I just saw your ds is a few days older than my dd (8-2-08). The suits are probably 2t and/or 3t, but if you have an average or bigger toddler, they may work. My dd is just a shrimp

oh my goodness! i think ds would like to go out with no clothes. eesh.

anyway, we're in philly. looks like you're in lancaster...so not really close at all. we'll just suck it up through this snowstorm and then hopefully he'll get boots at xmas and i'll buy a snowsuit (maybe check out local thrift/consignment shops).

(rainboots would be great...but we don't even have those)

All I could picture was a bunch of naked (except for hats and gloves, of course) kids running around laughing in the snow. Too funny! And completely valid in the world of toddlers.

Well I'm sorry we are not closer! My only other suggestion would be lots of layers and the newspaper bags over the socks (but in the shoes) and bread bags over the shoes.

Have fun!

Lots of layers. I would try to avoid jeans or other all cotton items. They just get wet so quick & stay that way. But wool or fleece or polypro work great.

My Mom talks about going winter camping (in Canada!) with kids who didn't have boots. They wore several pairs of socks & plastic bags. So it's totally doable even if not ideal.

I've done the plastic bags inside a pair of footwear many times with my girl guides when their footwear gets wet at camp.
