It may not show up as an "account" but with your SS# they can and will share your info. From the card's "cardholder agreement"

Bottom line - the fewer companies that have your SS# the better. If you need the card or want the card that's fine but just to use it as a gift card until the original gift money is spent it's not worth it.

Were you able to get in touch with customer service or did you do this online? I think that;s what we'll do. Thanks!

Thanks for posting this. These are all of the reasons why neither of us wants to give our social.

My dad bought me one, and that's how I felt as well. I don't think he meant to buy the money card, but oh well...

I went through the registration process, and it all worked fine. I'm pretty sure the registration w/ SSN is a Patriot Act issue, not an issue from the bank issuing the cards.

Just an update. We lost the sheet of paper that had the activation code which happened after SIL said we could use her ss number to activate the card. She lost the receipt to give us the activation code again so she went to Walmart. Walmart told her they had a record of her transaction (I didn't ask how) but they needed to physically see the card in order to give her the activation code. I mailed her back the money card so she can take it to Walmart but SIL decided to just get another regular gift card anyway. Can you believe so muh trouble and a well intentioned gift being so much trouble?!
