prefolds and Bummis SWW

I have only ever used BumGenuis on my son (we didnt start CDing until he was 14 months) I am expecting our 2nd baby in April and will be CDing from birth this time.

Im considering using prefolds with covers at 1st (until he/she is big enough to fit into the BG)

But, I have NO idea. I have ordered some Bummis super whisper wraps-will they work with prefolds? I have some newborn size and small size so far.

Here are my questions:

Do I have to change the cover at every diaper change or can I reuse (as long as it doesnt have poo on obvioulsy )

How long does a Newborn cover truely fit for? My son was 8lbs 6oz so im expecting this one to be in that kinda range.

Thats all...for now

I love prefolds and BSWW. I Snappi the prefolds and go through 2 covers per day, usually. The covers run large so I think the newborn size is worth having, although both of my babies were smaller than yours. I do think prefolds are a little intimidating during the first 2 weeks, especially at night.

all i use are prefolds, bsww and thirsties.

i never went past size m.

my daughter was 9lbs 7oz and nb size fit her for like five minutes but i'm glad i had them. if i had to do it over again i'd get the teeniest thirsties because they're thinner and have the cord area cut away.

since the inside of the bsww isn't wipeable i have to change them almost every pee time unless i trifold for more absorbency. trifold, of course, doesn't usually contain the poop and the cover gets dirty. i guess my answer is, it depends how often you'll need to change it. every time, most likely not.

I had prowraps for the first few weeks with DS, we only had smalls which worked okay, I did buy a few newborns for this time around though. If poo got onto the cover I would just rinse it off and dry it out. I changed covers every diaper change, but would just let them sit out to dry in between. I had 5 covers. This time I'll have about 10 (and a washing machine...so I will probably get them washed more often than last time)

The bulk of our stash are prefolds, and we have BSWW and Thirsties covers.

I prefer the Thirsties covers, because the inside is the laminate coating. On the BSWW, the inside layer against baby is polyester, with the laminate layer sandwiched between the front and back. I have found that BSWW smell after 1 use, because the polyester inner layer gets wet with urine, and absorbs the smell. With the Thirsties, since the inner layer is the laminate, it doesn't absorb odors, and can be wiped clean between uses-we generally use 1 Thirsties throughout the day (unless there's a poop-splosion), whereas with BSWW, we go through 2 or 3.

I have also found the Thirsties to be more generous in their sizing than the BSWW.

It's definitely a good plan to have both NB and small sizes on hand for when the baby comes, then you won't end up like we did scrambling to get the next size up when the baby has a growth spurt and the covers suddenly don't fit. I can't say how long a NB cover might fit for you-our first covers were Prowraps, and our babies are 6-7lbs, so we were able to get a longer use period out of the nb covers than we would have with a larger baby.

I would recommend with whichever cover you use with prefolds, that you either pin or snappi them. Fastening the diaper under the cover makes a HUGE difference with how well the poo is contained, and when we tried just laying the dipe in the cover, we averaged one use of a cover before needing to wash. At one point my SIL was going through as many as 12 covers a day until she started using a snappi.

I never used the NB SWW on my DD cause I didn't learn about them till she was a bit older... But they were in my first real CD (non gerbers) diaper buy.. I started with smalls DD was around 3 months and around 11/12lbs they fit big but worked fine I can;t remember when I sized up to mediums and whiel I did use larges in the end I was also CD a late trainer at 4 years and even then it was only if over more bulky CD set ups that I needed the large. The SWW were always amoung our favorite covers.

I never had bsww but i did have super brites, I found them to be plasticy. I did use thirsties covers and imse vimse covers, less plasticy I think. I always trifold pfs but I think fitteds are best for newborn bf poop.
