Screaming in Car Seat?

My 10 week old seems to have a real love/hate relationship with the car seat. He usually fusses when we put him in it but will settle if we swing it gently as we walk to the car.

He often enjoys it, looking around peacefully as we drive and sometimes drifting into a nice nap.

But then on other days, for no apparent reason--pow! He HATES it. When my husband drives I am in the back seat with him- but can't really comfort him until we pull over, sometimes he will suck on my pinky - he is not into pacifiers and I didn't even want to try them - but did because his screaming was so upsetting - I want to make him happy! ... Often though I am driving, and he is alone back there. The poor baby will scream and work himself into a sweat! I live in LA and am sometimes on the freeway, so it takes me a bit to pull over and comfort him and it kills me to hear him scream. I mean, I am usually in tears as well. I will pull over, take him out, check his diaper, soothe him, nurse him...sometimes he will be calm when I put him back but often he will cry again.

If he didn't sometimes really enjoy himself maybe I would consider not taking him in the car except for 10 min or less trips because his cries are so disturbing to me.

How do you all handle carseat meltdowns? I did a search but didn't find anything so forgive me if this topic has been covered...

TIA!

I have definitely been there! My girl is 6.5 months now, and is getting to the point where I don't worry about a meltdown most of the time in the car. However, it was definitely a slow process, and she still occasionally just screams and screams back there.

I have found that having toys to distract her helps. Also - it is a MUST for a longer trip that we go around one of her nap times. When it's just me, I will stop and nurse her, play with her a bit, etc, for 10-15 minutes if necessary. When both of us are in the car, she honestly does better when I am not back there. It's like she sees me and thinks, "why aren't you holding me?!" and she gets really worked up. Our carseat is behind the passengers seat, so I sit in the passengers seat and reach my hand back and rub her chest... for some reason that works wonders! Playing music also seems to help.

Good luck - in my experience it does get better with a little time!
