No-Spend Challenge 2010?

I’m thinking about doing a 'no-spend' challenge for the next year. I am trying to figure out details, and define need/wants. Our credit debt is almost gone and we have NEVER had any savings! Have you done a no spend challenge? What are the 'rules' (obviously it could be slightly different for everyone.) Our main goal is to save up an emergency fund and start a much needed house project in 2011.

There are a few things we 'need' that are really wants but pay off in the long run. We are planning to get chickens in the spring, we can be resourceful in making the coop but likely to spend some money . Also we need to spend some money for our large garden, which of coarse pays off because we grow a large portion of our food, all our own jam, tomato sauce, etc for the year. Also, we are almost done with a house project that will require us to buy some paint (for new drywall) and some trim and hinges, where should this fit in? Or does it?

What a about birthday parties? I can have them at our house or a park, but we would still feed everyone, we could make decorations and gifts with mainly things we already have.

For this x-mas I sold stuff on e-bay to buy my two boys gifts, and that’s all I spent on them. I'm thinking I could do the same thing for 'extras' like celebrations, gifts I can't make or need to buy something for, etc??
Any thoughts? Of coarse, it would be better to sell on e-bay and then save that!!!

I kind of feel the need to have it all defined out otherwise I'm afraid I will make to may exceptions, and then just give up.

Any thoughts, website, or blogs about this would be appreciated!!!
Thanks!

My dh and did a no spend challenge to try to learn how to live on a budget. It worked!!!

How we did it:

We moved to an envelope system so that everything was laid out and there was no way to "accidently" over spend on groceries, gas etc.

We gave ourselves an annual clothing fund, and a gift fund (for christmas, birthdays, anniversaries etc.).

We gave ourselves a monthly spending envelope, for little treats, for entertaining our friends (we love to cook for people) for birthday parties and all of those other things that come up! I'm not sure if this makes it a no spend challenge in some people's eyes, but for us the challenge was to use the envelope money and nothing else.

My DH is going to scholl full time as of jan. 22 and I'm stating my own in home busniess so the belt is tightening!!! We have 120$ now $100 (due to the county not plowing the court ) to last till the Jan 1 pay check that pretty mcu goes qall to our 1ST MORTGAGE payment! We have enough in reserve for January but need to spend as little as possible till our taxes come back! I'm in! My plans are to:

Bake our own bread (got out of habit when we were in transition and moving)
Pick up our 1/4 beef
Bake for DH's lunches (muffins, cookies, muncheis) other wise he eats out I've already made 4 doz cookies and 1 doz muffins (lets not get into the health of this it's what I deal with)
Making sure the wood stove is started as soon as possible! (I'm not a morning person, if its started asap it heats the whole house and the furnise does not turn on )

Cool! I need some support! Kind of random, but if your into baking your own bread you might be interested-

Homemade soft pretzles, so, so good! The recipe only made about 8 med for us, but I LOVE it-

and homemade tortillas, very good, takes a few times before you get good at makeing them. We always double the batch and make them once a week (today we made a big pot of rice, pot of beans, and tortillas, great for egg tacos too!)

(ps- that is my personal/ family blog)

My dh brings his lunch everyday, I try to make extra of things he likes and freeze portions. He's not picky so that helps!

there is a "compact 2010" thread on the decluttering, simplifying & organizing board. not exactly the same as "no spend" but some of you might be interested! i've been curious about the no-spend threads in the past but haven't clicked on them before. obviously we have to spend some money, so . . . how do you define no spend?

duh. i found the december no-spend thread and i see it means "no unnecessary spending". i bet that means all kinds of things to different people!

DH and I talked about this tonight. He's a no-go on a no spend challenge, but we are going to go on a "no restaurants" challenge. We're restaurant addicts, so it actually will be tough for us (but probably will save some money).

I feel "in" but then I waver... Right now I truly don't have the option of buying anything unnecessary. But in 2010 I am hopefully going to be finding work, an apartment for just DD and I... so I think, would I furnish it only with found objects? (Currently using file boxes as shelves for our clothes! I own furniture for bedroom only, it's at my ex's. I suppose I would buy used and I prefer to be minimalist anyway.) Are disposable diapers necessary? (With our current coin-op situation, it's about the 3/4 the price to wash cloth as to buy dispos, and in the direction we will be moving laundry is likely to get even more expensive.) I guess it would really help me remember to not slip up when things are no longer so tight. How much do you allot for entertainment or splurges so that you don't go bonkers?

this is a really big deal at our house. dh's entertainment and splurges . . . it's terrible! i do it too, but i'll go spend a few dollars at the thrift store. he "needs" to buy music, rent movies, he needs cash for fast food when out with friends. it's frustrating. i'm lucky that many of the things i like to do are free, but he and i could both benefit from making different choices regarding what we do to keep from going bonkers. like walking, meditation, yoga, gardening, um shoveling the #&@$ steps. i think this aspect of the no-spend could be really good for us, not just financially.

regarding finally having a little money to spend, and furnishing your place. furniture is kind of a necessity. however, when i hit the place where i could finally buy things instead of using hand-me-downs, i went out and bought new stuff, and really regretted it. i didn't realize how cold it would make my home seem. this was in the range of 4-6 years ago. the past couple years, i've been gradually replacing all my cheap new stuff with old stuff. craigslist, thrift stores, free on the curb. and i'm liking it a lot better. don't get me wrong, sometimes it's nice to be able to walk into ikea and buy something that is the exact dimensions or exact color you wanted, but most of the time it's a lot more satisfying to "hunt" and find the perfect piece - or the one that has the potential to be perfect with a tiny bit of work. or maybe that's just me.

Personally when I do a No-spend challenge I only worry about overspending or spending on whats not budgeted. So, in January I have my oldest birthday, Ive budgeted 100.00 for gifts. So, if I spend 98 on gifts I consider it a success, if I spend 120 Im over. Make sense? To me its not about actually not spending (dont think I could do that, I have to buy food and gas) its about spending within reason and budget. Another thing is being reasonable with the spending. Yes, I could probably budget 200-300 for DD's birthday but to me thats not really a reasonable amount to spend on a 3rd birthday (it could be to some, its seems a little excessive to me).
No spend means something different for each person. I track my normal stuff (like grocheries and gas) but not my monthly bills that stay the same every month (like our phone bill is 30.00 so I don't track it since its not varying). Some people track everything including morgage and bills, other people only track things that are out of the normal (so not groceries but they track date night, birthday presents etc). You just have to sit down and see what you want to track and what to YOU seems like a no spend year.

I found it interesting. I dont know how it works with kids either but 2010 is definately going to be different around my house. There is just going to be alot less spending for many many different reasons.
I may re-read her book again for tips and guidance.

Subbing. I'll have to think about what this means to me for serious, but just off the top of my head:

If we go to the store/mall just to get out of the house or for entertainment, leave debit card in the car!

Only spend $10-15 a week on activities for DS and me.

No eating out for lunch (unless it's a special occasion) and only eat out for dinner 5 times a month or less.

Stay on grocery budget and pref. spend less than the budget.

Stop buying DS clothes and toys all the time!

Talk any purchases over with DH first.

Stop buying things with the mindset "if DH gets mad I'll just return it." Better to not buy than to buy and return.

Update...
I've been doing well we had a limited cash budget for strickly food I had to tap into to get plowed out of our huge snow storm (26 inches) so dh and I could get to work. It seems the county wasn't real worried about plowing our court I was kind of worried that I would run out of things (fresh fruits and veggies, eggs, soy milk). But we recieved a care package today from Grandma with several packages of undies for everyone (that no one actually needed) in the wrong sizes so I took them back to Walmart and got: eggs, lettuce, apples, bananas, flour (ww + white), myple syrup and sugar; I paid a total of $.23!!! Thanks Grandma, lol. I think that made up the money, I hate Walmart but being in there I realized how CHEAP the food is
