is it because I don't have chickens?

must be.

Wow, 33 people and not one sliver of information. Luckly, I read some previous posts and found out that living off the grid varies from person to person.

I'm confused, why are you so offended? I live off grid what would you like to know? and do you want chickens because I have way to many and they are so over rated. ( at least in winter when they stop laying)

Did you ask a question about being off grid? (I remember seeing one before and now it's "gone") If so, I saw your post but didn't have anything to say, I'm not off grid and don't know a lot about it. Also, the countryside/off grid section can be pretty slow...

I'm not sure what upset you so.

This forum doesn't get the same level of traffic others MDC forums do. People who post on other MDC forums may have seen the thread in the New Posts section and read your post. That may be why there are 33 views. Also, search engines and people who lurk on MDC also read. It's after all a public site and even those not registered here can read posts.

Things are also slower because it's the holiday season. Many people who may otherwise post here are busy with real life events.

Sorry your feelings got hurt. I noticed your thread but didn't respond, mainly because I'm lazy right now, and am a little burnt on forums in general and repetitive questions in particular.

Off grid has a lot of variations, but the main theme is that you're not connected to the power grid, meaning electricity doth not flow into your home from a power company. Everything else is up for debate.

I live off road and off grid with no running water and am proud and happy... unlike alot of people, it seems, who are continually trying to talk everyone else out of living this way.

I read most of the threads on this specific forum, but I don't live off the grid (only wish I did!). So, I of course never have anything to add to any of these threads. :/

Welcome to the forum!

Chicken threads get more responses simply because there are more people owning chickens than there are people off the grid. And some OTGs have chickens... Stick around and check out the other threads, or do a search and see if your question was asked before and there may be an existing thread on the topic.

I see no problem in explaining the plain reality of my life that I love. Many people have a glorified hallmark vision of farming and living off grid and that needs to be demystified before they make the jump. I also like my privacy so maybe that is why I don't want pollyanna moving next to me. But if someone really wants it, I'll teach them how to milk a cow and be quite welcoming and generous.

Um, what is it about my statement that irked you so? I don't know you, nor do I know anything about you or your life. I'm just tired of hearing people whine about their choices and insist that living rough is so dire. It was certainly not a statement pointed toward you. I'm sorry you were offended... but I guess this is all pointing back to the OP's revised title. Peace.

I think when talking online it is really difficult to understand intention. I am sure if we were face to face we would most likely agree. I am not easily offended in real life but I was confused by that original statement you made and wanted to discuss it. I did not intend to encourage drama.

To the OP if you want to discuss off grid life, I would love to share information.

Yes, I think we would likely agree. Internet conversations are getting increasingly frustrating for me. Sorry again.

I'm not off-grid and I don't keep chickens, but I do live in the country. I stop in here just to see what's going on and I even contribute once in a while.

I just wanted to say that this is a very friendly, very helpful board. I live in the country, but with absolutely no animals, not even a dog or cat. I ask questions on here from time to time and get lovely, well-thought out answers with tons of information. And not a one concerning chickens! This is a slower board than some, and I'd say with the holiday it's been slower than ever. But I think that non-chicken owners are certainly welcome here! (I know I always feel welcome!)

I've always felt welcome here too, and gotten friendly answers to my questions, and I don't even live in the country--just dreaming of it right now.

I'm so mystified by this thread.

Is there a chicken-owners-only club? Can I join it? Did you know, I own 30 chickens (mostly hens) and I am buying eggs at the grocery store right now.

I don't live off the grid, but I would love to one day. We're stuck in suburb land right now. I figure now is a good time to perfect my home organization skills (SNORT) and work on gardening and all that stuff on a small scale. If I can't do it small, why would I think I could do it on a larger scale? That might be a difficult dose of reality to swallow. But one day I hope to live in the country, off grid or not, and have a family cow and grow enough organic produce to sell at the farmer's market!

Just posting to say I read this strange thread, I don't own chickens and I don't live off the grid. Just sayin....
