"Peepee Owww"

I need some help....my 16-month-old started grabbing his intact penis (starting at about a week and a half ago) and telling me "Peepee Owwwie! Peepee Owww!"

At first it was only in the bathtub when I'd sit him in the water....Now this morning he peed on me when I changed his diaper (which never happens) and then later (as I assume he was peeing in his diaper), he grabbed himself and told me "Owww" and went and got me a diaper to change him and he was hardly wet.

He has no fever and the tip of his penis is not red at all. I have not changed detergents or bathtime soaps or diapers.....I'm at a loss. I hate to take him to the pediatrician to be with all the sickies....but I don't want him to be hurting either....Anyone???

Haven't been through anything like that with my boys yet, but if there is no sign of redness or inflammation, it's likely that it's just some separation irritation, or even that he's experiencing stronger erections and doesn't quite know what to make of them yet.

You might want to see if you can get a clearer description of what he's feeling (don't know how easy that is with a 16 mo old).

I wouldn't take him to the doctor without there being real signs of some sort of infection. It could just end up creating a problem where there was none to begin with.

It's probably either just separation, or he just isn't sure how to describe the sensation of needing to pee. (Might be a good time to start potty learning, just pop him on the potty when he says "oww.")

There is a slight chance it's a bladder infection, but this is slight. The Dr doesn't really need him to check for that, s/he just needs a sample of his urine. I would see if you could stop by the office with out him and pick up a clean catch baggy or sterile collection cup (if you think you could convince him to pee in it,) then drop the sample off later.

have you seen this thread http://www.mothering.com/discussions...d.php?t=764732 It might help you decide what is going on.

Yep, my guess is separation irritation. I'd give him a baking soda bath, let him have some nakey time, and not worry about it -- and unless you see a lot more troubling symptoms, like fever, marked redness, swelling, frequent urination, etc., I'd skip the ped.

Thanks ladies....

It could really be seperation this early?? 16 months old??

I would have never thought he was just trying to describe the sensation of peeing...that could very well be it.

Yes, I was hesitant to take him to the peds....I agree with the making problems where there are none....I will wait and see....and not go unless there is fever or something else.

Thank you all again.

Keep in mind that separation irritation doesn't necessarily suggest that he's becoming retractible. The synechia breaks down at a nonlinear rate in all boys, with some of the adhesion coming loose earlier, some later. It depends on a lot of factors, including whether he tends to pull his foreskin outward a lot or a little (or none at all). The most common sensation is itchiness, which -- surprise, surprise -- often leads to some more tugging and more breakdown. But if he experienced a small section separating due to more force than usual, it may hurt for a little while. As we all know, the separation tends to occur from the distal end backward, with the most "tenacious" natural adhesions occurring around the corona. But it's not necessarily always that orderly. Some boys experience early synechial breakdown near the distal end of the glans very early on, but turn out to be late bloomers to full retraction. Some see separation of the whole glans up to the corona by age 3, but not full retraction until puberty. Each guy is different.

Of course, this only takes into account normal physiological considerations. As others here have correctly mentioned, keep an eye out for indicators that it could be anything else, but focus for now on letting his penis "rest" and heal, assuming it could just be development. You probably won't have to discourage him from pulling or grabbing; if it hurts, he wont!

I feel sooooo much better, thank you all SO much....

He does tug and pull, A LOT....his favorite toy is his penis....

The explanation was wonderful too....glad to know what is going on with my boy. So so glad I didn't take him to the doctor, where they probably would have wanted to get a urine sample and mess with it....

Yup, my son separated at 10 months and it was quite painful. It will go away as the glans smooth over. He is saying it hurts b/c the urine stings the freshly separated glans. This is my thread about it:
