Balance bike + helmet in winter?

We got dd a balance bike and a helmet for Christmas, but I just realised her head will be really cold under just a helmet! What do you put under your kid's helmet in winter?

We tried this hat on her in the store, it was adult sized and covered her head nicely, I wonder if I need to get one or if you have a better and cheaper idea?

but there are easier ways to make them I just can't seem to find a pattern online. I've made quite a few out of old sweaters using my own pattern.

We use the thin fleece hats you find for $1 at places like Old Navy. They fit under the helmet but don't make the head too sweaty. And we live in CO at 7000 feet.

Ditto the fleece watch cap, big enough to pull down over ears. You may need to remove some of the pads in the helmet.

What do you mean by fleece watch cap?

They're just those sort of soft, beanie-shaped hats that fit over the head tightly and can be pulled down to cover the ears.

I just use skiing helmets for bike helmets, I actually don't own any real bike helmets anymore. The equipment shops around here have big half off sales once or twice a year and I picked some up a couple years ago for use while sledding (we go down some big hills ) and then just started using them them bikes as well. It solves the problem of keeping the head warm in the winter!
