3.5 yo using shirts and anything else as chewtoys suddenly...

Been chewing on things like crazy!!! Out of the blue for about two weeks now. Has his hands in his mouth, too, also constantly. Normal phase? (I'm guessing yes) but still wondering why and if there is ever a reason to worry or try figuring it out? Can I do anything to help him stop? It is driving me nuts because he soaks and stretches out the neck of his shirts and then needs new one because it feels cold on him and he gets whiney.

He has also had a loss of appetite in the past week. And he does this head shaking and yelling thing when I try to talk to him sometimes, looking like a child who ate way too much sugar, basically, or total ADHD boy. Its like a brain overload type of action, usually while playing...I don't know how else to explain it, really. but he used to do this similar thing when he was teething, or so I thought. He just finished getting his molars earlier this year, he was super slow and late with all of his teeth. Took forever. About 5 mos ago, after all his second molars were through, he went through another typical "teething" phase...so I thought...well maybe they were still pushing? But now, again, 5 mos even after that? I mean, those molars looked fully through back in the Spring, right before his 3rd birthday.

I am now confused what is going on with him...but the couple people I mentioned it to seem to think its normal. And a little boy I used to nanny for, when he was almost 5, he went through a chewing on clothes phase...and then it just stopped one day. So I don't want to make a big deal, but with the other things jumpin in my head, I am wondering what is going on.

Maybe a tooth/ ear/ or sinus infection? I can see shaking the head and screaming if something there was hurting. Maybe just experimenting with a new phase? Have you discussed this with your pediatrician yet? They may suggest you bring him in just so they can eliminate infection as a posibility.

no help here, but my 3.5yo step-son has had a chewing thing for the past few months, since my LO was born (now 3 months), so i've chalked it up to some type of regression with having a baby around... but...

he has his blankie that he always carries around and suddenly now it's in his mouth like when he was a babe. And other things too, like new blocks or new toys he gets, he looks at them, but them shoves them in his mouth... like he has to test them out for taste or something. he's not too big on sucking on the clothes he has on (i guess the constant blankie suffices for that).

My kids chew/mouth things when they are low on zinc, loss of appetite is also sometimes zinc related, though that hasn't been an issue for us. I've seen symptoms like this in my son after physical stresses (50 ant bites last spring) and in both kids after a recent hard illness.

My 3yo just got his second set of molars. It's late for cutting them but it did result in loss of appetite (his mouth hurt) and similar activities to what you describe. Just throwing it out there as a possibilty.
