grandma carrier

My mom is very conservative, and normally a "do it like everyone else" type. When I put newborn dd in my Moby wrap a few weeks ago, I braced myself for her comments because it's not a Bjorn. Much to my delight and surprise, she loved it!

Today, she asked what she could get that would work for dd at her house - saying that she is just not skilled enough to tie a Moby. I'm new to the whole babywearing thing, too, so I thought I'd ask here.

She needs something simple - like really easy or she will lose her motivation to do it. If there were something easily/locally availabe, that would be great. (She mentioned a Snuggli, but I pointed out that baby would basically be hanging by her crotch, and that turned her off from that idea immediately.) She said she'd like something both she and my dad could use, but my dad is a bigger guy and I'm not sure what is out there, so she said it could be something just for her. I don't think she's looking for anything that needs to extend past the first year.

Any suggestions?

A SSC like ergo or beco would be good. It's simple - just buckles around the waist and chest strap and goes on like a backpack on the front or back.

A mei-tai might be a good option, a ssc like an ergo might be too much since your baby is just a newborn. If it's just for occasional use at her house, a snuggli is probably fine. My mil bought one to use with my kids and since it was so infrequent I didn't mind.

My MIL has used our mei tai while babysitting. It's pretty straightforward.

Edited to add: An me (5'1 and small) and my husband (6'3 and large) both use it as well, so it's versatile in that regard as well.

I vote mei tai or if she wants buckles a beco. the beco has an internal seat thing for newborns. no messing w/ an infant insert like w/ an ergo.

Thank you for your replies. She might like a mei tai since they are not very cumbersome. She won't be doing anything "fancy" like back carries but would like front and/or side carry. Which kind/brand of mei tai would be best/easiest?

my mum loves to wear our daughter in our mei tai

brands of mei tai = Kozy and babyhawk are two of the most popular and I don't think you can go wrong with either.

:

We have the regular babyhawk with long straps (which is why it can fit my husband!); I've worn both a newborn and my three year old in it without any trouble.

If she does want to go with a buckle carrier, I'd recommend a Pikkolo, which is a hybrid of an SSC and a mei tai. It's lightweight and very versatile -- straps cross on the back for a front carry but back-pack style for a back carry, and the toggle drawstring adjuster at the base of the carrier enables legs-out at an earlier age as well as an ergonomic forward facing out carry.

Dd's grammy and grandaddy both wore her in our Freehand Mei Tai and were very happy with that. They just did front carries. Mei Tais are great for front and back but a little cumbersome for a hip carry.

This time around (due any day now), grammy has asked for her own wrap. I just want to pick one easy carry with less fabric and get the perfect wrap and length for that carry and teach her that one thing and I think it'll be a cinch!
